Default New steering box or seal kit?

I searched the forums and didn't see this discussion anywhere -

I am about to replace my third steering box in about 40k miles. First two times were done by the dealer, but my warranty is out, so it looks like this time I will be doing the work.

My question is - I saw on one parts website that the seal kit will fix most leaking SB's. $120 vs $800? Interested in everyone's thoughts, especially yours DiscoMike.

How bad does it leak? I would try running a bottle of Lucas Power Steering Fluid Stop Leak...I use it on my RRC instead of power steering fluid...fantastic stuff

A few drips overnight I would guess. The Seal kit was listed on British Pacific's website, page 8 of their PDF catalog. I am going to try the Lucas first, but I don't want to end up like the first time with a burnt pump as well as the box leaking.

If the dealer has worked on it within the last 12 months, there is a part warranty of 12 months and unlimited mileage that will let the dealer bill Rover for the work.

Thanks Mike, but it falls just outside the 12 month warranty.

Are you sure it is the gear box and not the lines?
Might try a little Lucas, that may help clear up your problem.

Dealer says box - I will try the Lucas as soon as I get it back from the dealer. If that doesn't work, I will buy the seal kit and give it a shot....looks like about 30 seals or so. I wonder if I can find all of them at my local autoparts....hmmmm...to be continued....

1 month with about half the resevoir filled with lucas, and the leak seems to have stopped...going wheeling in the dunes on the cape this weekend - hopefully it will not fail on me out there.
