Default new U-Joints installed

Well with my future plans of new shocks and springs and bigger tires, I had the driveshaft rebuilt yesterday and greasable U-Joints put on the truck. Took them about 2 hours and cost me $190, which I didn't think was bad. They said the ones that were on the truck were in good shape, but that you never know with bigger trucks.

Do you guys grease yours every oil change?? after ever muddin' trip? Also would I notice anything different in ride quality if my previous joints were still in good shape?

Thanks GUYS!

Buy your self a good grease gun and a tube of synthetic grease. You really don't want to grease them to often, don't want to blow out the seals, except for the slip joints on both drive shafts.
Unless you are doing alot of serious rock crawling and water crossings then grease once a year.

You need a grease gun with a flexible hose on it.

and a pistol grip works great.

Actually for the cost of the tool just get a shop to do it.

If there are no jerks on the double cardon, get it changed quickly, there are too many people out there that can tell you some Bad $$$ stories about not changing them. Go take a look at the look at the pictures posted today on the double cardon post. It is a drive shaft and tranny waiting to go if it happens at highway speeds.

damn im not getting something... so even though there is a jerk on one side of the shaft, that doesnt mean it has been replaced, or has it and should i still replace it, because the other side doesnt have a jerk? well i guess its better safe than sorry and i should just replace it anyway. i just thought that if there were grease fittings it had been replaced. thanks

There are two areas that need attenetion, the double cardon, where the front drive shaft hooks to the t/case, both the internal u-joints must have zerks or you are in trouble. Also the slip shaft on the front of both front and rear drive shafts need greasing, there are holes, that have been capped, that you can stick a jerk in to grease them, make sure you do this.
Trust me, this is cheap insurance and has to be done.
Good luck,
Mike

Sorry, but calling them jerks just seems wrong

You can buy a set of Spicer u-joints from an auto parts store for around $80 or s complete rebuikd kit from Bill at Great Basin Rovers in Utah. probably looking at around $100 in labor.
Don't let it go too long.

$80 seems a bit expensive, UK price incl VAT is less than $30

Check this site

Sorry, I'm not trying to dis anyone, just want to save anyone from grief and embarrassment at the parts store counter when they ask for "jerks". Thats like sending someone to buy a can of K9-P (dog piss), some of those parts counter people eat their own young.

Here's an excellent site on driveshaft maintenance thats worth the lengthy read. It explains greasing u-joits in detail.
