Default Newbie help and intro

..howdy to all..I am new here on this forum, i just purchaced a 1999 disco 2 and I am just jumping right in.

I purchaced my 1999 disco2 at a local auto auction that the dealer i work for host. It is green and tan, SE7, Air suspention and alot of other goodies, It has aprox 74000 miles on the clock. Interior Is in great shape, not alot of wear and will clean up nice. The engine was not running !! coolant mixing from headgaskets...hence the $2800 winning bid.

I know..I know..what have i done..

I am pretty handy when it comes to motors and I have also worked for LR here in PA for a while to know some ins and outs.I do have a few quic question to start. I already have the motor out and apart. Heads have been checked and cleaned. Block is out and cleaned as well as all of the other accessories.

Here are a few questions.

1. I know there is an isue of valve guide clearance and carbon build up causing misfires. Is there a recommended valve guide clearence boar from the origonal.

2. what are the torqe values for the head gaskets 40lb then 90deg - 90deg torque to yeild ?? (i have new bolts)

3. I ran across a less poplated forum before I landed here and there were some comments made about block issues on 1999 modles. how comon is this amd what should i look for.

4. is there a sealer or compound that can be used for the oil pan, timing cover and other gaskets that may help the longevity of the gasket sealing.

Any other added thoughts for Upgrades, repairs while motor is out. Any input will be greatly appriciated. thanks in advance for you input.

DAVID

Welcome to the group from one 99 D2 owner to another.
I have some answers for you. First there is nothing wrong with 99 engines. If the heads are still at the shop and you are wanting a little extra performance, have them reworked to move more air.
When you put it back together, use Magnacor 8mm. plug wires along with Bosh Platium Plus 4 plugs. No K&N air filters, they are hard on our Bosh MAF's. check and replace the belt tensioner and pulleys if they have not been done, the originial ones failed alot and the TSB's sent to the dealers on this. When back together have Rover run it for recals and make sure you ask them for the radio code at the same time.
Unrelated to the engine, check the front drive line constant velosity joint to see if both the internal u-joints have grease fittings, if they don't replace them before you drive it, they will fail and take the tranny also.
Do you also have ACE, look and see if you have a double fluid reservor for the power steering?
Make sure you use the copper spray on the head gaskets, replace the t/stat and change all your fluids before playing hard with this.
Good luck,
Mike

Thanks again for the reply. I believe it has the ACE system but i will double check . I did forgot all about the radio code, good point. Sorry to post such a long opening. I have seen some other comments about the joints, do you have a part number, vendor or $ info?

Thanks again for the resonce.
