Has anyone ever resolved a driveline vibration that wasn't related to the front driveshaft? Do people just get tired of chasing it and learn to live with it? Seems like every thread started on the topic of vibration drops off without a clear resolution.
It has had a pretty severe vibration/shudder between 25 and 40 mph since I bought it a little over a year ago. Front drive shaft has been rebuilt and rebalanced twice, rotoflex replaced a couple hundred miles ago. Before new rotoflex went in vibration went away for a few hundred miles after a shop looked at some things but they couldn't tell me what they actually did and then they started getting really sloppy so I had to go elsewhere. In the process of having both diffs replaced right now and just trying to have a game plan if that doesn't work as well as I hope it does.
It's an 04 with a little over 140k. They offered a used diff for the front since that's where the vibration seems to be centered, but with the labor cost, I figured I would go ahead with some more serious upgrade and put a trutrac and HD axles in the front and a detroit with HD axles in the rear. Assuming this clears everything up, I'll be moving on to a new shock and spring setup later in the year.
That was basically my question. I've been looking for over a year on various forums and they basically follow the formula of:
1) I've got a vibration at ---MPH to ---MPH
2)check your front driveshaft
3)check your front driveshaft
4)grease your ujs on your front driveshaft
5)rotoflex
6)check your front driveshaft
7) front driveshaft is rebuilt, still vibrates
8)rotoflex
9)still vibrates
10)check balance on front driveshaft

I was asking as I just picked up a super-clean '04 with a bad motor that I plan to go all out on. It is vibrating. It has like new tires and looking underneath, the front driveshaft appears new as does the rear coupler. There seems to be some talk about differentials. I wouldn't know why a differential would be causing vibration, but I've never been inside of one on a Discovery.
These people poured money into this thing like it was water.
It is vibrating at right around 45mph. A wheel would do it all the time, as would a rotor. A tire imbalance would worsen with speed. They just did u-joints 3k ago. It's definitely up front.
I never assume anything and haven't really torn into it. I got halfway through boring a spare block for sleeves last night and am going to try to finish it up tomorrow. Just thought since the subject was raised, I'd inquire if there were known trouble areas to be aware of.
On mine, the vibration was only present when drive force was applied to the front axle. Ruled out rotors and wheels on that one so it was down to front driveshaft, dif, or drive force related steering change. Driveshaft was rebuilt and rebalanced twice with no change, all steering components checked out. Fingers crossed the new dig is the magic bullet. Would love to finally have a smooth ride.
If the driveshaft was out of balance, I wouldn't think power on, cruise or coast would effect the vibration much at all.
I'm just wondering what in the front differential would contribute to vibration. CV joints that were worn would make a bunch of noise on steering. Maybe a worn pinion bearing?
Is the front driveshaft indexed to the differential input flange?
Worn pinion bearings could create an "out of round" operating condition for the front driveshaft. Worn carrier bearings could do the same in relation to the dif and axles. Not sure what all other symptoms would be present with that though.
Put each of the front wheels through the paces testing for faulty ball joints if you haven't addressed that. I initially felt something strange in the steering wheel when going over railroad tracks by my office. Then the truck would shake on the highway. One day soon after I was looking into this my bro pressed on top of the tire & said my ball joints was going out. Replaced those & it drove like brand new. A bad ball joint is not hard to diagnose after you have researched some associated literature.
I have had 2 discos with vibrations both felt similar and were at above 40 mph.
My 2002 was similar to chubbs. A bit of play in the ball joints , replaced the ball joints and all was good,
On my old truck 2000 , I had play in the transfer case and after swapping it out it was gone
So 2 good areas to check
On my 2004 D2, I replaced track rod, drag link, steering dampener, and all four ball joints (lots of fun on those!) and my shutter of death on the highway is gone.
'at a boy! Those sure are some puney ball joints for a branded "off road" vehicle, huh?? I can't imagine them holding up more than 2-years between daily driving & weekend rec'
On the topic of ball joints.
Anyone ever found any replacement ball joints for a D2 that are greasable?
