Default Oil Change Discussion

Its service time again!

Are there any advantages to running the larger capacity Fram PH8A oil filter over the PH16?

How much oil does it usually take to fill in a change?

Has anyone had any experience running Shell Rotella T 15w40 engine oil in their 4.0L?

Six quarts and I understand that very recently Shell has greatly reduced the zinc in the 15w-40 Rotella.

I normally run the high capacity wix or mobile 1 filter. I run the shell rotella oil and have had no issues in the 70k miles I have put on the old girl.

Your probably going to get some flak for the fram filter as I believe they are missing the anti drain back feature and have been suspected if not outright known of causing oil pressure problems in our motors.

Running a larher filter give you more filter media, NEVER use a Fram filter they are the worst thing you can install on a Rover. Use either the factory filter, a K&N 3001 or either of the Mobil 1 filters.
With frams and their poor construction they can allow the oil to flow back into the sump causimh engine dry starts which is bad for your engine.

I use the fram filter because I have an unlimited supply. I have a wix filter on there now (its what land rover used since at the time they ran out). I've used frams before and never had any problems on my other vehicles. Its the same filter we use in the differential of all sterling trucks. I dont remember what the PH8A is off of, I think one of the forktrucks with a chevy engine. I'll see if I can sneak in an order for Wix filters instead. Anything with Land Rover or K&N on it will draw suspicion.

The reason I asked about the larger capacity filter is because I heard they can cause potential damage to the mounting when driving off-road.

Here's a good study on oil filters to read up on.

Opinions and Recommendations - Oil Filters Revealed - MiniMopar Resources

Also, Mobile 1 and K&N are the same filter, minus the hex nut on the end of the K&N.

Thats funny because the frams I used on my other cars were the tough guard. Its the only fram the store near me at the time used to sell in fram.

I wonder if I can convince the shop to get away from frams altogether.

Fram oil filters are the Bosch Platniums of the oil filter world.

Is the saying "spoiling the ship for a hapeth of tar" a worldwide one ?
How cheap is wagging oil filters from work to run a high end 4wd ? The cost of a decent filter is nothing in the bigger picture of running costs.Try getting towed by the car in front if you really want to save money.

Point of fact, I regularily draft tractor trailers on the highway.

I could go out and spend a bazillion dollars on oil filters from a gold plated factory, or oil from a chrome bathed refinerey, but in the end, I still have to spend $130 to fill it 2 to 3 times a month.

That is what we heard as well. We sent an inquiry but no response

I agree with you wholeheartedly Mike. Frams are not great filters. We also use K&N, and Mobile 1 as well. They are tops.

I have a relative that is a diesel mechanic and he said he has heard of confirmation of this through the grapevine and that a chemical engineer from Shell said the only oils that still have the zinc are the 30w and 40w.

We use Bosch filters on our rovers.

Im doing a service tomorrow on a couple trucks so Im going to cut open a few of the LARGE semi filters, and a Fram PH16 and post up some picks.

Why? Why not? More boredom/educational than anything.
