When I got the vehicle, it had the oil changed to 20W50 a couple of days prior... I ran it like that for a while and then changed the oil for Warranty purposes and went with 10W40, since that's in the Manual...

I am in Denver where it has been running in the 90's forever, I am running 5W/30 with no issues. Get it tested!!!!! Mike |

In regard to your oil choice, how often do you do a 2,000ft climb in hot temperatures. I know that my oil temp would get pretty hot in such circumstances and that is when you will start loosing pressure with low viscosity oils. Running around town or on the open highway does not cause an issue. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That is 6,000ft higher than where you live. Answers my question as to when you last did a 2,000 ft climb, does not tell me how hot it was or how hard your car was working. Was it nice and cool at that altitude. But if you like running 5w/30 in your car, that is all that matters. But the question asked in this thread was whether the oil he was using could have caused the oil light to come on and the answer is yes. I am not stating that it was the cause, only that it could have been the cause. If his oil pressure test comes back normal, then I would say that it was most likely the cause. |

I normally run a 10W/40 in the warmer months here in Colorado, 20W/50 in California, but I got a great deal on some Mobil 1 5W/30 and used it.
So, yes I agree, I should be running heavier but I wanted to get the point across to this person that, oil isn't going to be his instant and permanent fix. He needs to know exactly what his pressures are so he can get a better idea if he is about to experience an 03 failure. Mike |

I just wanted to give an update and not leave anyone hanging (not that it's that important!)
![]() I took the truck to the dealer this morning for pressure tessting and I am currently waiting to hear back from them... I know, not a whole lot of info., but at least I took it to be tested, right? I post the results... Jonathan

UPDATE!!!
Just got off the phone with the dealer and the truck has near 0 psi. on idle and 3-5 psi. off idle... they are thinking it is a check valve in the filter and are going to spin on a LR filter now that rule out... Worst case they said is an oil pump... Thank goodness for the extended warranty I have...

As a matter of fact, I know you will argue with ME, but if you investigate you will find that the engine still uses the same US designed tappets for decades. They were made for 20W50. James |

What does this mean that 20/50 oil is the right summer oil for Rovers? How about in the winter?

Oil, did someone mention oil?
Check your sheer rating. I think you will find 15-40 will be a better choice on Flat tappet engine.

actually at the dealer chances are they will change the oil to 5W30 and put the LR filter on and you will be fine.
We have never had any issue with 5w30 and thats what LR says. Works in all conditions.
