Glad to hear your Rover is right with the world though, mine too is an 03 HSE7 whose VIN falls squarely in the service bracket. I just had my 60K servicing done at the dealer, and if it needed anything, Im sure Rover would have done it. As it was, they replaced some check valve that made my hill decent and ABS lights come on...
Happy Labour Day people!
The problem with the tech notice was that the dowels did not line up properly and the timing cover was not aligned properly. The dowels involved were on the engine side. That is why the solution was a new block. Just replacing the pump or the timing cover will not fix the issue.

P76 -
I understand the bulletin, or at least I think I do; so why would Rover in this instance choose to only replace an oil pump if the only recommended fix [in an Oil Pump failure situation] for an 03 Disco is to replace the whole block? Ideas?

There are too possible answers:
1) They are trying to cheap out and get the car past the warranty period.
2) the failure is not to do with the issue in the bulletin

I'm leaning toward option "A".
In any case, I hope the man's Rover makes a full recovery! Man...I LOVE a warranty. My Saab is about to go under the warranty knife next week.

Default Update!!!

So the a$$holes at the Warranty company denied my repair claim because the oil pump is not physically broken, so they consider it working...

Anyone replaced an oil pump on a 4.6L engine? I have looked at the RAVE manual and it seems pretty straight forward...

I consider myself very mechanically inclined and can pretty much fix anything - should I give this a crack? I figure the worst part is if I hit a snag, I can have the truck towed to Southwest Rovers and have them finish the job...

P.S. Stay away from Warranty Administration Services for a third-party warranty. That's who denied my claim. What good is a warranty if you can't use it???

Dude! What a gyp! now...I have never replaced an oil pump on a Rover, BUT I have replaced many in Toyota Land Cruisers. Given your self proclaimed mechanical inclination, I say go for it! I would help if I were close. It is a 6 beer job in my opinion ( a time meter I have developed over......time) and you have already "worse case scenario'd" the issue...what are you waiting for? WE WANT PICTURES!!!

Hi Guys!
Haven't been here in a while. My Disco went back in 2003, and was driving a Rangie up until last year. Now I'm starting to look for DII's again for my winter truck. It's sad to see the market take a hit, due to high oil, but I can't believe the deals out there. I'm looking at an '03 and an '04 (I can't believe I just missed out on a G4!), and I don't understand this TSB. If it's a "mfg error", why wouldn't LR be responsible for the repair on those given vehicles? As for the ext. wrrty., you have my condolences. For what they charge, you might as well self-insure.

Any other issues with the 2003-04 to watch out for in purchase? As someone who has owned 3 high-mileage LR's, I've never had any issues with anything except that stupid ACE and SLS (which I'll avoid like the plague)!
cheers

UPDATE:

I took the truck to Rob @ SouthWest Rovers and it turns out it is the cam bearings... They have broken apart and worked themself out of the block and can be spun by hand... New bearings and cam, lifters, etc...

Good thing I have the 3rd party warranty and the parts are covered (up to $3500 total). I may have to pay some, but it's better than all of it.

Jonathan

Jon -
This has been an interesting story, and I'm glad this has a positive-ish end to it. Any liklihood of you posting pics of the bottom end of your rig in the "before" state?
All the best...
Todd

I'll ask Rob if I can come over and take a look... I may even ask if I can impose and be there when he works on the engine just so I can get a first-hand look at the components for my morbid curiosity...
