Question Oil Pump failure why?

Keep reading about Discovery II oil pump failures which would cause catastrophic engine damage. What causes this? How do you prevent it? Any preventive measures that we can take?

Most oil pump failures are generaly do to sludge build up in the pan and injested into the pump.....so the pickup gets plugged and the pump starves and runs dry...fries the motor

Preventative measures= regular oil changes with good quality oil
getting engine warm enough to burn off the humidity in the motor to prevent the sludge in the first place

If you look up an oil pump on the net, you will see that it's just two gears that run together, so this actual part failing in unlikely, it's always the result of something.....

Moral of the story...change your oil it's cheaper than a motor!!!

Not sure about where you are reading these oil pump storys but they are not true. Rovers don't go thru any more oil pumps then any domestic truck.
I have been knee deep in Rovers for years and only know of 2 failures and as Dean mentioned change the oil frequently, even do an engine flush once a year and you'll have one less thing to worry about.

Glad to hear your answers, thanks for the responses.

Relieved to know that there is NOT a design flaw in the Discovery II engine. Will heed and practice your advice! Good preventive maintenance is required with any vehicle, especially with Land Rover products.

Thanks!

Michael

There was/is an oil pump drive failure issue with the Td5 diesel engine fitted to early Discovery II's.It was apparently caused by the oil pump sprocket bolt not having Loctite or similar on its threads. The bolt works loose and lets the sprocket go round without driving the pump shaft - result, ruined crank, mains and big ends. The last one I was involved with was about 6 months ago.
This is a Diesel only issue - nothing to do with the V8 models,so I guess US owners need not worry.
