I just use whatever dino 75w90 I find.. I'd only recommend synthetic if you dont plan on changing it for another 60k miles... but other than that, just get the cheap stuff and change it once a year or so...

I use the same oils as Josh with great results. The heavier gear oil gives better wear protection and allows the diffs and t/case to run cooler and quieter.
Jamie, Do you know how to do a drain and fill on a D2 tranny, if not shout.

Did you run any temperature recorders after the switch to 140 ? I did some testing and found the 140 ran about 20 to 30 C warmer in the transfer case and about +10 in the axles, i have found lowest temp with 75W90.
That kind of sounds counter-intuitive. Was your OAT for both tests exactly the same? Did you run the same brand before/after? Synthetic/Non-Synthetic before/after? Rig loaded the same before/after? Same course before/after? Same driving time before/after? See a pattern here? What I'm saying is that there are a lot of variables. I don't know if I'd jump to the conclusion that a lighter weight oil runs cooler unless I was absolutely sure that the before and after variables were taken out of the equation.

Yes same conditions, oil used for the test was Caterpillar (Mobil) I did the test a few years ago on a Defender 110 CSW and have stuck with 75w90 since. I recently picked up a D2 and have just changed all of the oils, i have fresh temperature recorders in place and should have some max temperatures after my first road trip later this month, i will post the results.

Thicker oil will tend to run a bit warmer in anything. The +10cC in the diffs is neither here or there. The thicker oil will offer a lot better protection. However, I would not use 85/140 in the transfer case. Too thick to get into all the areas that it needs to.
A lot of shops here in the states suggest it, especially on high mileage units for the wear protection as well as the noise reduction.
