Default overheating problem.. need help

okay well i have a 2002 disco and it keeps on overheating. the check oil, service engine and battery light are on. some smoke comes out of the beginning of the exhaust where it begins to point backwards not downward. i also noticed what comes out of the muffler is kind of like quick puffs and not a continuous flow and its making a squeaking noise when i accelerate. not too loud though but any ideas of what the problem(s) may be?
so far i am very dissapointed

Check for air bubbles or signs of oil in your radiator and, if you are blowing small amounts of white smoke, smell it, if it smells sweetish, it's your coolant burning on it's way out of the exhaust. This means that you have a blown head gasket. The squeaking sound that you hear could be the water pump on it's way out which can cause the overheating and perhaps head gasket problem. A word of caution, don't drive your vehicle until you have fixed the overheating problem.

im getting it towed tomm to a land rover service shop. after i saw smoke i told myself i would never turn it on again until i get it checked out. would a blown head gasket cost me serious money or what. its still under warranty so hopefully it will cover all of this.

i really wouldn't feel comfortable taking it through mud again after all this. i knew my limits while taking it out so i guess all this happened when it overheated and i found out the coolant cap blew off somehow.

If you have taken it through mud, it is most likely mud blocking the radiator. So you can just get a hose and point it in from the grill and from the engine side through the fan. You can also make up a thin wand that fits between the radiator and air-con core to wash it out as well.

No disrespect intended p76rangie, but washing the mud out of the radiator after the coolant cap is in orbit, is a little late.

Assuming that your overheating has resulted from mud stuck to your radiator, and that you need to replace the head gaskets, I doubt that warranty will cover it. The head gaskets themselves a cheap, but the labour might cost a couple of hundred $.
