Those are call Limb Riser....When you are at the trail and there is a tree branch sticking out, the branch will ride up on the cable keeping it away from hood and windshield.

I flipped the spare tire rack and it barely fits. It's really hard to open the rear door.

Does anyone know of any adapters that attach to a rear steel bumper or something like that?

Mine was a little snug also, i just kept the bumper slightly oiled with a tire shine and deflated the tire down to 20-24psi.

Kinda liked that it rested right on the bumper instead of putting all the weight on the lock and hinges.
