Default Qs B4 car goes into shop for warranty work

Hi all.

Can I just run some general questions by you all before I take my car into the LR dealer for warranty work next weekend.

1. leaking rear windows - mine are leaking at the top of the door frame where the adjustable glass meets the frame separating it from the static glass in the door. This only occurs in car wash and not rain. Normal or should be fixed?

2. clunk and door frame shape change - when the passenger window is wound up and down, the shape of the door frame at the top nearest the front of the car changes shape and clunks as though the glass is forcing it nearer the car. Normal or should be fixed?

3. graunch from brake pedal - every time the car is started, the brake pedal (or something in the vacinity) makes a graunching noise. Normal or should be fixed?

4. lumpy cruise control - the speed of the car wanders when set to cruise between maybe 2mph +/- set speed. It's abrupt speed changes which feel unsettling; not smooth. Normal or should be looked at?

5. big lurch when selecting reverse - when the engine and tranny fluid is cold, selecting reverse and releasing brake pedal (auto box) before reverse is selected causes the car to launch violently. Solution is to hold brake pedal for 3 or 4 seconds after shifting. Normal or should be looked at?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to understand whether these things are Land Rover traits or problems that can be fixed.

Thanks very much in advance.

Jason.

The brake related noise you hear is the ABS doing some sort of self-check. It is normal.

Great, thanks Chuck.

Anybody any pointers on the other stuff?

cruise control surge is fixed by updating the cruise control module. or actually changing it from a 4.6 to a 4.0 reduces the surge.

the leak in the windows might be a bad seal or a the door frame needs to be adjusted

Door frame distortion when window is forced completely up=normal
cruise irratic=normal, can be fixed but not completely
brake noise at start up=normal
clunk when put in reverse cold? do you park on a hill without setting the emergency brake? The trans would be loaded at this point and could "clunk" into gear. clunks are opinion and experienced based. One person's clunk could be anothers accepted norm...... Service writer should be able to tell you.

Leak..... FIX IT

Hi saharatj98,

Many thanks for your replies. With regards the hill situation, the drive way has a slight slope but nothing major. I don't use the emergency brake so the car rolls forwards and stops when in Park. Should I be using the emergency brake to avoid this?

Thanks again.

Roven4life .. I was wondering ... could you tell me what year the cruise control module update applies to, and how I can tell if mine is a 4.0 or 4.6. I've have complained to my dealer about surging speed using the CC, but they have told me flatly there's nothing that can be done.

its vin based.

but when you start off does it surge quite a bit after settting the cruise.

cause their is an update if its in the vin range.

basically it turns the 4.6 into a 4.0 in the ecu.

I thought I should update my original post. Since writing that, I've taken my car into the LR Dealership twice for warranty work and on both occasions couldn't praise them more. They addressed the following:

Floppy front wiper arm
Floppy rear wiper arm
Clonking noise from steering column
Whacko central locking, remote, interior lights, alarm problems
Seat belt warning light
Clunking front windows
Sticky remote fuel flap release
Worn out wiper blades
Leaking oil sump plug (they found this)
Leaking rear windows
And I'm sure some other stuff too.

The Land Rover warranty really is worth its weight in gold - I'm disappointed it costs $2.5k or so to extend or I definitely would. Originally from the UK, I am not used to having the warranty cover routine servicing so that was fantastic news (37.5k service in my instance). Total cost of all the above $60 which is their admin charge for warranty work.

The other cool thing was that they had an Enterprise kiosk in their dealership which made a free rental a breeze. I would've preferred an LR3, but hey!

Not advertising, but for those that want to know I used Rosenthal Jag & LR in Chantilly outside Dulles, Washington DC.

Jason.

If I could do it again I would definately get the extended warranty. The money I have put into my Discovery would make a grown man weep. I would take a bet you could easily recoup the cost of the extended warranty in repairs. Just my 2pence worth.

Just let me confirm here, if your car is under warranty you don't have to pay for servicing in the US?

"FREE" rental, what's the score there? Don't tell me they pay for a replacement car too?

Hmm, maybe I should reconsider this. I would be scared about getting my money back but if it's pretty likely, it would be a smart move.

As far as I know. When I took the car in to have the warranty work done, I asked the service manager to complete it's next scheduled service (I had no idea when it was due but I knew the car had been serviced at an oil swap shot (Meineke) just before I bought it so I wanted LR to look it over) and neglegted to ask the cost! I was a bit bothered by this and when I picked it up a week later (we'd been out of state so left the car with them - they even gave us a lift to the airport ) I was preparing myself for the worst. The invoice I got was for the $60 admin charge - I was over the moon. If you take out the extended warranty, all service charges are covered during that period too as far as I know.

Yep But only for a maximum of 3 days if your car is fixed, longer if it's not. They had an Enterprise employee with an Enterprise desk and Enterprise computer in an Enterprise office in the dealership I've never seen anything like it. It was incredibly slick and all costs with the exception of insurace are picked up by the warranty / dealer. Nothing could have been easier really.

That's a pretty good deal with the servicing costs. I have heard a similair thing over here once in the past but that was only a special offer to try and boost sales for that brand.

Now that I cast my mind back, I did have a Toyota years ago and because I had upgraded to the extended warranty I could get a rental cars cost reimbursed for a set period, a week I think, if warranty work was being done. Having a rental place in the dealership, now that's service. I can't even get a cup of coffee at mine!
