Default Question regarding Whine noise?

Hi All,

Before I get started please forgive my username... I have had Jeeps in the past and used that as my username everywhere, so it is difficult to change it!

anyway, I recently bought a 00 series 2 LR Disco V8 and I have a question.... I have been looking through the site and think I know the answer to this question, but I want to ask it anyway.

There is a weird whine noise that comes from my disco when I get above 50km/h, it is a very slight noise but grows till about 100km/h. It only happens when I am accelerating and at about 90/95 km/h you can hear it quite clearly if you just sit on that speed. I have had it back at the dealership twice and both times been told it is normal sound, but I am not 100% sure. After reading other people's accounts on here I think it must just be a LR quirk.. but just want to be sure.

I think it might be the diff or transmission as it only occurs when accelerating.

Any thoughts? The Disco has 70,000 Km's on the clock.

Personally, I have no aversions to Jeeps

Without actually hearing it, I'm pretty sure that noise you're describing is gear whine from the transfer case.
It's completely normal--but since your truck is new to you, you may want to check the fluid level in your transfer case and differentials to be on the safe side.

Welcome to the land of Rovers.
A couple of thoughts regarding your whine.
T/case whine is pretty usual do to end play and general design of our t/cases, nothing to worry about though. You might consider changing the oil, even going a little heavier, like 80/90W sunthetic and add 1/2 bottle of Lucas oil suppliment, this will quiet it down some, also good for the diff services.
Not that it is causing a whine for you, but check the double cardon joints on the front drive shaft where it hooks to the t/case, can not be serviced cause they have no grease fittings, when they fail they take out the trannt case, get them changed out as soon as you can installing Spicer replacements with zerks.
When you get more used to it and if you want to do alot of wheeling get back to us and ask about converting your t/case back so you can use your CDL.
Good luck,
Mike

Does your D2 have the ACE option on it?
The hydraulic pump for the ACE often has quite a high pitch whine to it also. Some folks here have suggested adding Lucas PAS leak stop the hydraulic fluid in this system, you could consider this if you have the this option. I'd try changing the fluid to Valvoline synthetic PAS fluid first or in addition to the Lucas addative.

I agree with Salty as for the fluid, Vavoline Synthetic and Lucas are the best for ACE and power steering maintance and noise reduction.

thanks for your advice guys, I really appreciate it. I love the truck to pieces hey, but the whine just got me worried.

I shoulda mentioned what the spec's are of the disco. It is a base model, but the previous owners added all the fruit. however with the suspension, the only add it has is the rear leveling suspension. Could that be a cause of it? I doubt it.... as you all said my feeling is the T/Case.

I will change out the oils on the wkend and see what I get n let you all know.

If I read your last post right, do you want to lift the truck and don't know how to get around the SLS, self leveling system? It can be done easiy up to 3"s.

sorry no, all I was saying was that it had the sls on the rear

no intention of lifting it, just trying to give more info as to figure out where the whine comes from

T/case is the biggest part of it, and common.

Mine does the same thing from 70-75. I think it might be normal.
