Default Rattling/Grinding Noise in 2004 Disco G4...

I took the G4 in for the 37500 service and had them check out an M&S light issue. They did the service and said the M&S was due to a faulty battery, so they replaced the battery.

After leaving the dealer, I drove the Disco about 100 miles, stopping at several places on the way home. After arriving home, I parked in the driveway for about 10 minutes to unload a few things. I went back out to pull the truck into the garage, and when I started it up and shifted into reverse, a rattling/grinding noise started coming from what sounded like the lower engine area. I immediately jumped out and popped the hood to see where the noise was coming from but before I could get the hood open, the noise stopped.

I've been racking my brain to think about what it could have been, and the only thing I can think of is the tech at the dealer dropped an oil container cap into the engine, but that sounds ridiculous.

What do you guys think this could be?

Its worth a shot but do you have any oil in the vehicle. your not leaking at all are you?

Sorry I have to ask. It can and does happen to the best of us.
Anyway, if all is good. dont bother unless it comes back and alot. Otherwise the techs aint chasing down a one time thing. Especially if it aint doing it.

Yep, checked oil and other fluids, and everything is good-to-go.

Didja find a socket in the driveway that isn't yours?
Heat shields can make a huge scary noise if they rattle- Or did it really sound like something IN the engine?

Sorry I was participating in the new skyguy thread on Dweb - what a maroon that idiot is...

No, I thought the same thing and checked the driveway, but nothing fell out. It sounded like the engine, or maybe T-case was grinding something up...

Dude- I've got no idea- Did it stop when you put it back in Park or only when it was in reverse? Did it seem related to the RPM? It could have just been a heat shield or something. Any chance you bumped the hi-lo lever and it wasn't completely in hi?

I know, this is perplexing. It sounded like the engine or T-case was grinding something up. It started when I put it in reverse, then stopped a little bit after I put it in park and jumped out to pop the hood. It wasn't related to RPM's. I know it wasn't a heat shield - I know that sound. I didn't bump the HI/LOW lever, either. I'm going out to look at things in the daylight, maybe it'll be more evident this morning.

Were you moving, after you put the tranny into reverse and then it started making the noise? Try starting the truck, while not moving put the tranny into reverse or drive, any noise, now let the truck move while in either gear, does it now make the noise?
I am wondering if you are having a diff failure.
Mike

I got in started it up and put it in reverse and started backing up. That's when the noise started. I put it in park and as I was jumping out to pull the hood release, the noise stopped. I haven't been able to replicate the noise since last night, either. I've been driving all day. Just weird.

I'm thinking it was the transmission. I've been having vibration issues between 2nd and 3rd gear. When I took it into the dealer, they said they it wasn't acting up so they didn't do anything to it. I'm probably going to take it to LR Cape Fear after the holidays to get them to give it a look.

If it were the tranny and it was causeing that sort of noise and vibration, it should have set the trannt mode lights off.
If it happens again, I would get it into someone for a better look.
Good luck,
Mike

Thanks Mike. I'm just going to keep driving it and not worry about it until it happens again.

If it was a manual I'd day it was a failing flywheel. That happened to me and symptoms were vert similar. The dual mass flywheel and begun to fall apart and made grinding noises from time to time, interspersed with long periods without any symptoms at all. As far as I know, the auto does not have such a flywheel
