Default Rear Differential??

Hey Guys,

I think my rear differential is going out. I keep hearing popping noises while I slow down. I don't know if the person who owned the Disco 01 before me did a lot of off-roading in water or what, because when I changed the fluid it was nasty and milky colored. Anyways, I noticed one of the teeth was missing. I figured that is where the popping noise is coming from, am I right? How much does it cost to replace it or is this something I could do? Thanks...

David

The third member is easy to replace. 3-4 hour job. What you want to do is pick up the complete third member.

Then it's just a matter of:

Jacking up the truck
taking off the rear tires
unbolt the driveshaft
5 bolts per axle, slide the axles out of the diff.
drain diff
unbolt the diff and work it out of the axle housing
swap replacement third member in.
reassemble

contact Paul Grant here on the forum using private message, he should have something laying around knowing him. Paul has a lot of rover parts on hand at great prices and great service.

If he doesn't have one let me know and I'll point you to some other people to try.

It sounds like you only need to change the centre. It is probably only 1 to 2 hours. It is something you can do yourself. You can pick up a second had centre relatively cheap.

Used 3rd. members can be bought pretty cheap, Differentials - Rear Differentials
Sometimes lower when purchased direct from someone who is parting out a truck.
