Default Recommend a roof rack.....

The warden, in all her wisdom, has decided that she wants to bring our canoe along with us camping and there's no way it will work on the tent trailer [trailers to close to the truck]. The problem is i don't have a rack on the Disco [other than the factory side bars]....whats the recommendation of the masses??? I will also need it to be able to carry some kayaks in the furtur [she wants some of those too...sheesh] and we ski in the winter.......

thanks, Dean

Simple solution is some Thule high mounts and a pair of cross bars. Elegant solution is a Safety Devices full rack. There's a Genuine Rover Adventure rack that falls in between. NWP copies of the Safety Devices ones are kinda lame and the Garvin Wilderness rack is kinda lame- but often cheap on the used market.
The Thule stuff would be easier to remove when not needed.

The plastic gutter trim usually will show where the clamps were- it gets deformed. No biggie, really.

Dean,

You didn't mention if you have a DI/DII/RRC/D90/D110/Series, etc.... if you have a Disco with the stock roof rail you can purchase the Thule/Yakima crossbars that attach to the stock rails (won't damage the gutters). If you have a RRC then I assure you that you will not damage the gutters with just a few canoes/kayaks.

I have a couple hundred pounds on my SD roof rack and it's fine. Here's a pic of the gear I carry on a recent trip to Canada. I carry two pelican cases: the larger one has my spares and the smaller on has my tools. Also, I have 5 lights, 1 hi-lift jack, 2 sand ladders and roof rack florring that weighs 40 lbs alone. One item that is not in the pic are my tents, sleeping bags, blankets and tarps.

Somebody near me has two roof cross bars with a half loop thing to hold his sea kayak.

I do like the Safety Devices ones but have a Land Rover Expedition rack as SD racks are not available here. Some mods done to it to allow me greater flexibity.

One thing to remember about roof racks is ... remember you have it on, especially when entering covered car parks

hannibal rack, if you want to put on a canoe. put some foam or a spacer on the cargo area and tie it to the cargo area and the rack rails. or don't install rack rails and tie both ends without the spacer to just the cargo area.
