Went into shock when the dealership said $800+ to replace the PS pump. It's an 02 Disco II. I know this is no easy task just by looking at it, but I am mechanically enclined to do it if I had some direction. Anyone have best price supplier for reman pump? Found one from roverconnection.com for under $300. Any diagrams, manuals or similar to help me with the replacement process? I'm on such a tight budget right now, I have to do it myself.
Some background to verify...I lost my belt about two months ago. Replaced it and at the time noticed the PS pully had some slack in the pully. It began to squeek weeks later and knew it was going out soon. If I look in the fluid tank, it still moves and is circulating, but no PS. Thanks in advance for any help. |

That doesn't surprise me considering my warranty company just paid my LR dealer $1,200 for a few gaskets (oil pan, water pump) and a tensioner pully. I paid for the drive line $45.00. They must quote a lot of labor. But..... They did a good job, not hack... should be for $1,200. Have you checked a local repair shop? They have one here in Greensboro, NC. When they list the line of imports they work on they mention LR by aka "Rovers". I'm sure they did good work. I could eat all three meals off their serive floor. Good luck! Did your pump make any funny noise when turning?
Foreign Accents I just noticed that they are a Bosch Authorized Service Center also. Arn't Mid 99 and up Dicso 2's Bosch? |

I just did a power steering install on my 02 Disco II about a month ago. If you dont have the ACE, its pretty simple and straight forward.
It took me about an hour to remove the bracket and everything attached. I recommend removing the clutch fan, as I didnt and I wish I did. It would have saved alot of time on reinstall had I taken it off. |

No ACE (Active cornering correct?). Also, have seen everyone posting to use ATF (automatic tranny fluid correct?) instead of power steering. As well, Mike and many it looks like add the Lucas with it? The PS pump just looks weird because you can't actually see the pump. It's kind of tucked back under some front aluminum plate.
How about recomendations to buy it other that what I found at rover connection? Do new (reman) pumps come with gaskets? Anything else I might need other than fluid? Pump made no noises when turning. The bearing or something inside just started squeeking. Then the other day, it turned into a tractor...no PS, but the pump seems to work with the fluid still moving in the tank..at least still circulating. Thanks all. Rob |

It sounds like the bypass valve in the pump is malfunctioning. It will circulate because the pump is turning, but it wont apply any pressure.
On a Discovery 2, you need specific power steering fluid. We use Valvoline, or rather I do. Valvoline Max-Life if I recall. You can only use ATF on D1 pumps. The pump itself is tiny. There should be no gaskets or related things that need to be installed with the pump. What you do is remove the pulley, and you will see the 3 or so (I cant remember) bolts that hold the pump on the bracket. You also have to remove the bracket. To get the bracket off one of its studs, you have to remove the clutch fan. Theres instructions and diagrams in the workshop manual on the RAVE CD. I didn't remove the clutch fan and it was a hell of a job getting it on and off. If I did it again, I would remove it. Just remember you dont need a tremendous amount of tourque to tighten the brackets bolts and such. Snug is enough, these engines are aluminium and can be easily damaged. ======= What I did awhile back was mine was leaking and causing noise. I was going to buy another used unit for $$$. Alls I did was remove it. I removed the 4 Allen Key bolts that hold the pump itself together and replaced the gasket inside with Silicon. It comes apart in two peices, easy as can be. I havent had any problems whatsoever. |

Going to tackle this today. Next question...how do I fill and bleed the fluid? I can see a bleeder valve on the gearbox, but pretty blind as to how to fill and bleed.
Might need advice on removing the fan too, but should get around it eventually. Going to look, but where can I get a copy of the RAVE CD? |

Found and downloaded a copy of the RAVE cd. Helpful, but to remove the fan, shows "special" rover tools I don't have. Only after removing the three fan pully bolts did I find I'm taking the wrong bolts out. The rave manual tells me how to bleed. Thanks!
Would still like to figure out the fan removal to make this easier. |

How the "F" do you get the top "stud" out of the PAS and aux housing? Only thing keeping me from doing the swap. Going on hour Fn 6.
When I'm done, I'll be sure to to give a "detailed" message on doing this the easy way. Like getting the wrench set (Ford clutch fan tool) from Kragen or similar auto place for free and the clutch fan will be off in 30 seconds. Or buy it for $25. And supply a diagram like I have from the rave cd. |

Piece of cake...if you have a workshop manual! Once I had a copy of that it was an hour to complete. 2-3 hour job is ALL it should have taken. If that. Too bad I spent 6 or 7 hours scratching my head and picking my nose. Did not know you have to remove the AC unit to remove the "bracket". Also would help to have the clutch fan tools to get the fan off. Thanks to another forumn, people helped out on that. Can get the tools at Kragen or Auto Zone places for under $30. It's the Ford Clutch Fan Tool. 1-7/16 and a 2-3/4 slim wrench. This adjustable wrech and a hammer idea was bogus I caught somewhere else. Other than advise from Alak and his mentioning the RAVE CD, I'd have been lost. Way to step up folks! I searched this site/forumn for it and found JACK. Went to another Rover forumn and found the link. Had to download a program called 7zip to open it though. Took an hour just to downlaod the file. Just a little dissapointed with this group. So, need to replace the power steering pump? Here is what you do. Get a copy of the RAVE CD and a set of the clutch fan tools and follow the manuals instructions. Here is where I downloaded the CD: green-oval.com
The Green Oval - Downloads | Land Rover Data You might need a program to open it. I searched for ISO since this is an .iso formatted file and found 7zip for free to use. 7-Zip It would be soooooo benneficial if this site had a section to list manuals, sites and so forth. There is a photo page, but no file storage page. It would be easier to use Adobe and transfer PDF files....ya'd think. Anyway...yeah...I'm bitter from taking up my whole day to do a 2 hour job. But, I did get it done. Thanks Alak, for the note on the cd. Probably would not have figured it out without. I'm done. |

Yeah, It gets a little frustrating sometimes. I never even read the manual until after. I just started taking things apart. When I got to the part where I realized you needed to take the clutch fan off, I just used a pair of vice grips to remove the stud from the block, then repeated that step to install it. It was very tight, which is why I recommended removing the clutch fan to you in the first place.
![]() Little skimpy on information around here it seems from time to time because some folks seem to take their trucks to rover technicians alot of the time. But, your all finished! Happy Rovering! |
