Well going on the prices from napaonline.com I would say they are 70 bucks high on the price of the joints

I know they will charge list used to be a parts manager at a ford dealership. I was just pointing out the difference in cost on the parts alone. I have never had a u joint replaced at a dealership so I have no idea how much the labor should run so I left that alone.

You are being ripped off. The front shaft can be rebuilt by an independent shop for around $250 with parts. I'm certain that the entire project done by an independent shop should not cost more than $350. I just bought all the parts (4x Neapco 1-0005 U-Joints 1x Neapco 7-0081NG rebuild kit for $110 from partsamerica.com w/free shipping) that leaves a very generous $240 for labor. There is a .pdf on discoweb.org on how to do everything yourself. If you have nothing in your garage as far as tools go, you'd still not spend more than $200.

Do it. It's going to be my Thursday night project for this week too.

$1200... OH HELL NO. Brand new driveshafts can be picked up at ~$350/ea from Tom Woods or Great Basin Rovers ... then its just taking 8 bolts out of each and putting the new ones in.. rebuilding should be about $200 or so as ealex said.. PLUS, you want to get them rebuilt with greasable ujoints (remember to grease them every oil change).. which LR will not do.. so it'll last you 50k miles until you have to do them again (or even worse, they explode and cost a few k worth of damage).

Don't get the NAPA u-joints. They suck.

How many miles on your truck? This squeal you are talking about, u-joints don't squeal, they vibrate, click or pop and then fail, no squeal.

They can squeal. I've had the NAPA u-joints do it on mine. Thet can also make a chirping sound.

I thought the only thing that would squeal under your Rover would be a Jeep and it's owner.

How does it feel to get F)(*?><cked in the A(*&(SS?

Ditto the rebuilt cost. My buddy just had his rebuilt for him at a driveshaft place for $185. All he had to do was unbolt it, bring it to the shop, pick it up the next day, bolt it back in. It was well done, balanced, and had grease fittings in the new joints.

all they could say was that it looked like it was falling apart when they took it off ,and that it would need a new one, so because the funds are low at this time is there any way to drive the vehicle without the prop shaft?? what types of questions should i be asking them "tech" about the front prop shaft???

What year is your truck, does it have CDL, if it does, go have them engage the t/case and take you truck and drive shaft to a good tranny shop for a second option and a less expensive repair.
