Okay so I did the preventative front axle swap yesterday.
The center bushing was a LOT OF FUN (sarcasm) to remove so as to be replaced. But that was the only bit of trouble I had. I've got every bolt tight. I'm pretty sure the swap went well. BUT There's always a BUT. Now I have a sound from under the truck. Sounds like a wrench being drug under the truck. It's a high pitched metal sound like that a wrench makes when you drop it. I can't reproduce the sound with any type of specific driving. It will also make the noise and then stop making the noise seemingly on a whim. I thought first it might be a rattling brake pad but I heard the noise when it I was braking so I don't think that is it. Also it seemed to be most prominent when I turn around a corner. I saw Charlie from Sports and Classics after church at Goldies and he told me what I already suspected that it has to be something we worked on because it wasn't making that noise before we worked on it. The only other thing we did was rotate the tires and balance them. I'm wondering if I could have dislodged something when I jacked up the truck for the tire removal. I'm really at a loss at this point. |

I have called him on his cell and he hasn't mentioned that he's stuck. But then again I tend to monopolize the conversation. The latest on this is the drive home from the high school today. Revealed at least to me, that it's got to be a U-joint. But which one? So thinking about the swap. You have a BRAND NEW DRIVE SHAFT up front. and A BRAND NEW RUBBER DONUT THING and BRAND NEW DRIVE SHAFT BUSHING. But the only piece of the drive train not replaced is a sole U-joint in the middle just off the emergency brake on the rear shaft. Why when selling a product to upgrade/change the drive train you wouldn't include ALL the parts needed is and issue I'll take up with British Pacific. I'm guessing its that one. But then again, I'm assuming that the ones they sold me were new and not bad. |

Which tells me drive train again. Because at that speed you have to press the accelerator to keep constant speed. Thus keeping torque on the drive train. During the lower speeds I'm on and off the brakes and the accelerator. |

No it sounds like you are dragging a wrench down the road.
Coincidentally if you tap on the brake drum with a screw driver it has the same pitch as the bad sound. |

Thanks for that Rovermech.
They are good. I bought that U-joint at lunch and will replace it as soon as possible. I experimented with the noise. When rolling with sound. I applied the emergency. Sound changed. But on another one other occassion it did not. And for good measure THE THREE AMIGOS ARE CURRENTLY ON. P1590. Rondo. Holy crap. You know what you were right. Wow. How could I have missed that! I tapped on the exhaust when I was under there yesterday. Those pipes have a different frequency than the other stuff. I didn't check it specifically but exhaust mounts are unchanged. |

Tomorrows the big day.
I'm going to replace the last U joint. I'm of a mind now that I have a bad CV joint. Last night on the way home there was a pop that sounded like we had hit something with the front end. I've got a real bad feeling that one of them is going out. Probably the left front. Strangely enough the 3 amigos are on right now as well. All that kinda makes strange sense somehow. |

Okay boys and girls.
It's not the drive shaft or the U-joint. I swapped them all out this weekend. I also drained and refilled my transaxle. And it's a good thing I did. See in the other post. I recorded the sound. The Sound. It's a 4mb MPG. So give it time to load. We got hammered with a huge rain storm Saturday and Sunday morning so forgive me for the splashes. But you can hear the jingle sound. I'm thinking CV joint at this juncture. We checked them one at a time and they don't feel bad and don't do the normal grinding sound on when on the jack of a failed CV joint. I'm thinking anything covered in oil wouldn't make that sound so that might rule out the differentials. But at this point I'm just guessing. I'm tired and fairly demoralized. |

Tell me something, if you jack the truck up can you shake the wheel and get any extra play in it? I would check all 4 myself. Also, I wonder does it make the sound at lower speeds like around 2 to 5 mph? If so, I would also take each wheel off and turn it by hand to see if there is any way the problem is at the corner. Hell, we are crazy around here. I would seriously secure it up in the air, and take all 4 wheels off and run it in drive and look around for the noise. But I'm crazy like that
I hope you get it worked out!

Okie, is this sound coming from the Front or Rear? If you have a flex coupler at the rear driveshaft, make sure that all six bolts are tight. Is there any vibration to go along with the sound?
