Default Roofrack ??

Ok , I'm broke SOB and i don't have money for $1300 rack .

So I'm asking , is there are a roofrack that is afordable , and will be able to hold the hanibal tent when i'll save up my penies for the tent ?

Also would it be eazier and cost efective to make one ( and attach all the cool stuff to it . like work lights and atachments for the high lift etc... ) ?

Like I said I don't have that much noney , but if the truck brakes i can aford that cause i'll just ask for loan extention ( i have a personal loan that i'm paying off ) , and that's why i have 7 cents on thursdays .

Thanks , Art

So from the financial side of things, are you aware of the apx. 2MPG loss you will experience with a big roof rack?
Yes, you can save money and make your own rack.

If money is an issue screw getting a roof top tent... just use a regular ground tent. If you want a more integrated solution, build a platform inside your truck and sleep on that. Roof Top tents are a luxury item...

I am aware of it . But i will be going on a road trip to canada this sumer/fall . and maybe also this year road trip to arkansa, new mexico and arizona . So i would like it for those road trips . now , when I would get home i would take it off and store it till next road trips/vacation next year.

So for those 3 weeks i will not cry about the milage loss.

So is there any good sorce for info on what NOT to do when making one .

I'm doing some long trips this year also with no base camp (camping different spot every night) .. I'm sleeping inside the truck, and bringing a small 2person tent just for extra measures..

See i'll be going with one person . posibly with two . So I will have bagages .

I'm even tempted to see if i can buy a cheap popup trailer or something like that . and keep the bags in the trunk .

But the road trip to GA Atl with two other guys , the trunk was full of bags and even one of teo in the back seat .

Yeah . What do you guys go when you plan a trip that is kind of like camping road trip ?

It isnt as cheap as building your own, but this is the cheapest rack I could find! It is tough and durable(it is what is on my rover) and I love it!

Here is the link to it:www.northwestparts.com

Here is some pics:

well if i was you and needed to have a roof rack as cheaply as possible while still being strong, what i'd do is go on ebay buy the yakima towers and bars, you'd prolly want at least 3 probably 4. get some expanded steel to lay accross the top and either weld or attach with another means. you'll need the high-rise kit to clear the alpine windows. and that platform would be plenty strong to hold you and a tent. is it redneck? you betcha. would it work? yup. and you can add things onto it as you see fit. just my .02

Some used Thule cross bars and a Sureco aluminum rack will getcha there. Skip the Hannibal and get a cheaper roof tent- there are a lot of others out there that are good, but cheaper.

leave out the "land rover" and you'll pay less. Some guy was selling roof tents for just a couple hundred or something not that long ago. Quality was nothing like a name brand, but for something you rarely use- it works. I spent $2900 on a rack and roof tent, and while I love it, using it 7 to 10 nights a year- it's cheaper to stay in a nice hotel.
