Default Rough idle on my 2000 Disco

For a week now, I have noticed a rougher then normal idle on my Disco at speeds lower then 40. Only really noticable in traffic or city driving.

Drives fine on the freeway.

But yesterday the check engine (amber color, not red) light came on first blinking, then 4 seconds later staying on solid.

Anyone have an idea of what I am about to encounter when I bring her to the mechanic?

My first guess is a bad plug wire.

Anyone?
Thank you in advance..

So what is the mileage on your truck??? Can you be more specificas to what the engine is doing, it sounds like it is not an idle problem if it is happening at 40 MPH.
With over a 100 different codes, there is no since guessing.
The good new, though, is that many of the emission control parts are covered up to 70K, so you might want to have someone scan for codes and see what is wrong, it may be covered under warranty and as such you may not want a general mechanic parts it to death.

I have 125,600 miles

I had had it smogged Tues for my registration renewal and it passed so wouldnt that mean that my catylitic converter is ok?

It feels as if it is missing a cylinder. Not the usual smooth rumble my V8 has.

Dude, why do you have to live so far away? I've got a code reader for OBDII. I think you owe me some beers anyway...

With that mileage, the first thing that I would look at would be the the plg wires, then the coils, then the O2 sensors, any of theseif original will cause the truck to stumble, miss and surge.

Yeah, I think it's a bad plug wire.
They were last installed at around 85K miles.
Im at 125K now.

Funny though, I was driving today and the service engine soon light turned off.
But it still drives rough.
Bringing her in Tues AM.
Lame.
My wife is bugging me to trade her in, since she's been needing a few things lately and Im not even driving her much.....

Cross that bridge later..

Rover, when your in the South, Southern CA that is, let me knowski. I like sharing my beers.

Reattach the wire that the smog tech loosened.

rocky ron might not be too far off on that.

I was told that a smog test requires some weird things for a tech to do including pulling some wires to check timing.

I am not from Cali so I dont know the stingent requirements of the test but I do know they aint easy.

Good idea but it was running rough a few days prior to the smog check.
Frankly, Im surprised it passed.

Anyone remember which LRO member works for a parts distributor?
Im thinking that if it is a bad wire, to replacing them with the Magnecore wires many LRO members are so found of.
Thanks.

I think RoverConnection usually has them the cheapest. If you go to Magnecore's website, they have a link to who has them on sale.

before you buy anything just get it diaged. Wires or coils suck on those.

You might have a problem with the coil.

look at the misfire codes to get an idea.

For example if you have misfire six and one then its not the wires but the coil.

Reason is the coil pack contains one and six. Look for relations before you throw parts at it.

also its possible the valves could be hung up. A good way to check this is clear the codes and test drive on the open highway. If it is the valves it will misfire. If it doesnt then spray the back of the intake down. That should get the coil to misfire.

Finally take a look at other leaks, if it is a coil then chances are you might have an intake leak or even a valve cover leak. It costs alot less to install new covers and intake gasket if the coil has to come out.

If it is my valves, or a valve cover leak, could it have problems going around corners?

I ask this because the service engine soon light went off last Fri. But it came back on today at the very same corner as last week.
my appt is tomorrow AM, and I just wanted to help my mechanic with ideas.
Thanks Rover Bros.

Turns out the main problem was on my number 4 plug wire.
The valve gasket above it leaks occasionally and may have soaked that wire.
So tomorrow I get a new valve gasket set and plug wires. New plugs as well.
My mechanic wants to put in the stock plug wires and the champions the book calls for.
I looked for magnecores but they would cost way to much to deliver to Riverside CA by tomorrow.
I saw on this site that someone had 8MM magnecores and Bosch plat 4's on there Disco but my mechanic said the Bosch plat 4's would throw sensors left and rt.
Lame.
I wish after the money I have to spend tomorrow that my rig would at least run better then before.

Sharky, unless you want to spend the time to remove the intake yourself then put the magnacores on.

I wouldnt recommend anything but LR. Why, well if it is a pain to put on then buy putting on OEM, you can count them out for a problem.

Sharky they really suck to do.

they aint like the Disco ones.

Also too are magnacores individually numbered. LR ones are. In fact you can buy individual wires if you want. If you have a problem with wire number one you can buy wire number one. can you do that with magnacore. Probably not.

Not to mention are the lengths the true lengths of all the original.
