Default Ses Is On

So after a good wash and wax this weekend started the Disco up and the SES stayed on. I've been looking into changing the plugs and wires but since I have little experience and an extended warranty I've been hesitating doing it myself.
Called the dealer up and they immediately told me it was a plug wire. I got the wires and plugs hoping I'd beat the light but not luck, plugs, wires and are still safely in the utility closet, waiting for someone with some skill to put them on.
Local garage want $309 in labor. I'd do it myslef to save a few bucks. I have the Rave CD but those directions don't inspire confidence like a Haynes Manual would.
The engine has been missing for a while. I jus thought it was normal since it's always seemed to be like that. The miss is only slightly noticeable at idle. I thought I was just listening to close but hoped the plugs and wires would even things out.
If I do this myself, will I void the factory/extended warranty??? Will the light automatically rest or will it still need to go to the dealer. How do I get codes without an OBDII diag. scanner?
I hate SES lights.

its not a hard job if you have small hands. the coil pack is in a horrible spot. Make sure to do them one at a time to make sure you dont cross wires. Also, to reset the light just disconnect the battery for about 30 seconds or so then reconnect....the light should go off after that! Good Luck!!!

Well, what year disco do you have first off...

Second off, I was told NOT to disconnect the battery because it would reset my ECU and it takes hundreds of miles to re-adapt to your driving style. But, I have a 99 DII, this may not be true for a DI, hence, my first question.

If you want the light to go off, go to Wal-Mart and buy a scanner... it's like $120.00. You'll be using it more than enough to justify the purchase.

It's an '04 SE7 with the secondary air I believe. And I have big hands and those extra pipes on the firewall don't help much. I've tried 4 times for at least two hours per sesson trying to find way to jam my hand back there. The best I could do was touch a few of the wires. Only one that I could actully change on my more recent try but I left it since I could not get them all changed.

Dan Erickson had a decent write up on this job... Scroll down a little bit on this post and you'll see it...

I like the write up and will try it in the future. I popped the hood last night only to find out that one of the wires was not securely fastened on the plug. I popped it back on disconnected the battery and the SES is not on any more. Drove to work everything is still good. I guess. I hold out until the wires actually fail. There is still an ever so slight vibration every now and then but it does not show any fluctuation on the Tach, only noticeable at idle and only if you're looking for it. I pulled out eh K&N too. Truck does not seem to drive any different but the throttle body did have a dark film on it. The OE filter tended to leave dust in the box, With the K&N there is not dust in the intake box with leaves me to wonder if how well its doing it's job. The K&N has been in for roughly 10k mile. Best milage to date wit it was 16.5-17miles but that could just be a clean engine. Have not sea foamed, yet, but the Disco is peppy as of late, ran some MM oil in the tank and crank case. Disco just feel strong so I might just skip the ignition wires for not and try for that exhaust or ECU upgrade.
