Default Shifting From P to D

I own a 2001 Series II Land Rover Discovery.

Can anyone help me with this problem.

I am having real problems moving the automatic gear selector from P to any other of the gears. The problem is so bad I have taken to leaving the car in N using the parking break to stop the car from moving when parked.

To work through the issue I sit there and either rev the engine and the problem will eventually go away and the gear selector will move.

Thoughts?

If you are luckey, you only have a failing brake light switch which is located down at the brake pedal.
Have someone stand behind your truck while you try and brake, do you have rear brake lights?

Not bad new, just a harder repair.
Most likely the solonoid that is on top of the tranny, under the console, may have failed.
Probably time to go find yourself a good mechanic and have him verify the problem.

Thanks, I'll see who I can find. I see you are in Parker. I am not too far from there. Can you suggest a Land Rover friendly mechanic? I'd rather not go to Land Rover. They charged me $48 for wiper blades last week!

I have only been here for 2 months, but it was suggested I use Rob Colombin. I have met him and he has a great shop, in Evergreen, but he is good.
Do you get out on the trails much?

Thanks.

No, I really do not, but I can forward you to someone who is an off road nut. He has a tricked out Disco Series I and is often out there with the best of them.

No that's OK, just thought I would ask.
This is my truck,
