There's generally two brands to choose from, ARB (safari) and Mantec. Southdown has a cool looking snorkel too, but it's not available in the US. The Safari snorkel is all plastic, and runs along the outside of the fender; the Mantec is mostly steel, and runs inside the fender well. The Safari's scoop faces forward (for a ram air effect); and the Mantec faces rearward to prevent foreign objects from entering the intake. They're both around $425 plus or minus $50 depending on vendors, sales, ect. The Southdown has all the features I like--plastic and steel, runs inside the fender well, and has a forward facing scoop, so I'll wait and see if it becomes available in the future.

I was miss informed by another source, they told me that the safari snorkel did not increase the depth of the water i could get into. if i got the safari snorkel installed is there anything else i would need to do before getting into deeper water?

Snorkels increase the height of your air intake... which is where a person generally takes in a lot of water. gasoline engines are not supposed to really go under water though, so you put yourself at risk by doing deep water crossings.. that being said, there are multiple areas that you can protect further incase you do find yourself in deep water.. enclose the transmission ecu (located under the drivers seat) and the regular ecu (located to the right of a passengers foot).. put dielectric grease on all the electrical connectors under the hood.. raise your breathers.. seal your doors off better.

I've taken my disco in water over the hood before, but it's a big risk doing it.. water in the wrong place could kill many different things..

First off.....get a mantec snorkel. Higher quality in my opinion and it looks way way better. Safari snorkels are just plain fugly.

Either snorkel wont do much to your vehicle alone.....without other waterproofing they will pretty much just raise your air intake high up, which is good for sucking in less dust, but wont cut it for going into deep water.

Your going to have to extend your axle breather lines (I think only rear for a DII), extend your tcase and tranny breather lines (if they arent already), use dielectric grease on everything---namely ECU boxes and fuse box up front. And certainly double check your door seals and rear hatch seal.....though....the water usually comes in anyway if you go deep enough.

Btw....even with a snorkel and prepped everything, in a petrol engine you still cant go much above the top of the hood.....just too many electronics and stuff to fry.

*edit*....damn ryan, beat me to it. Hehe....they are almost the same.

I've got a Mantec on my D1 and couldn't be happier with it and even gained a few miles on a tank of gas . The Mantec is just a little less bulky in my opinion than the Safari Snorkel but they both serve there purpose well

When going into deep water in a gas truck there is always other risks other than just keeping water out of your intake ! Your ECU is very vulnerable to water and many other of your electrical components as well. Another is making sure your axles, tranny, and transfer case are properly vented to the highest point and always checking your fluids after for any signs of water which could be fatal if ignored . I'm sure some others could add some things to the list.
Good luck

The Safari Snorkel's look like can can definately take a beating !

I second the Mantec option! If you decide to go with a Mantec, there's a member here, SafariRover, that normally has a few in stock for DII in the $350 range.

I do not understand how you can say that the Safari snorkel looks ugly compared to a piece of pipe hanging out the guard like the mantec.

'cause thier a big fugly plastic tumor hanging off the side......lol

...I just dont like them... .the mantec's are nice and clean, come out of a small hole, climbs the pillar and ends at the top....plus, they dont have a big "safari" logo molded into the sides of them.

It's all personal preference.. I dig both of them.. but went with the safari snorkel one... had a price i couldn't beat and I still think it looks good.

I went with the Safari- the plastic is very forgiving if it gets mashed. The Mantec snorkels tend to rust. I've seen some only a couple years old that were losing their coating and rusting badly... seen others that were fine though.
