So I took back the Disco that was so riddled with issues I was dreading over 5k in repairs easily. I went up the road and found another one. It too may have some issues, although I have found NONE sofar. The joy is that it is so much better than the first one it seems like night and day. Its an SE that falls in the bad vin range, but has 80k miles. You can tell it was babied. It drives smooth, doesnt need an exhaust, ultra clean in and out. Its black on black. Ill take some pics tomorrow to share.
Sometimes it takes a lemon to realize how good lemonade tastes.
As I understand it, if it's got 80K on the odo you're probably okay. I'd still install a proper oil pressure guage--might as well do exhaust and coolant temps while you're at it--so that you can monitor what's normal on your rig. Once you know what's normal, you can then sound the alarm if something falls out of spec.
BTW, I'm a newb too and I'm totally digging the DII!
I would def get an oil pressure gauge, just because you have 80K on it doesnt mean you are in the clear. Mine went out for the first time at 99K, luckily I was able to catch it before it caused any damage
Which gauge do you recommend? I would like something aesthetically pleasing that fits with the other gauges, maybe even a digital one that fits in a blank space somewhere.
I second what Spyder said. 80,000 miles is not a guarantee, or even a good indication, that your oil pump will not fail. Excellent, religiously applied maintenance will prolong the life of your oil pump and avoiding extremes in operating temperatures will also help. But the root of the problem is that the oil pump is subjected to stress due to mispositioning of the timing cover and that will cause the pump to fail eventually.

I have learned an oil guage is the way to go, you can monitor the pressure and not have to rely on that idiot light. I have read if it the light comes on and stays on you are done!
I bought one and used an adapter at the oil filter for hook up. Details and tutorial to follow soon.
Here is the link to the adapter and I used a diffferent type of guage but any electric oil press guage will work.

Ya for sure, it's the cheapest thing you can do and one of the most important. Fast shipping, good stuff. I got the guage from another vendor on ebay for less than theirs, I paid around $69 for the entire setup...
We can thank the VI Land Rover Club
Will that plate work with any gauge? I fancy a digital one that is not as intrusive into the limited space already out the front window. If not it will do...
Fitting a gauge is a must but it doesn't have to be on the dash. It can be fitted using a tee along with the original switch. The point is you would only need the gauge for occasional checking and if the light should ever come on, It makes it much simpler.

For this plate any electric (not mechanical) gauge will work, there is an extra port incase you want to do oil temp too... Mine is still in the box waiting it's turn on the project list. The only challenge I see is running a couple wires off the sending unit to where the guage is. I'm putting mine on the dash to the left of the wheel in that little cubby space. Kinda out of the way...but I like the look, few rovers will have one.

This method will allow the factory pressure switch to remain in its original location while the new pressure sender mounts to the oil filter adapter plate and reads from there.
The purpose of the gauge is to read oil pressure consistency during start up, normal driving, wheeling, etc... and to learn what is consistent to YOUR rig.
Of course the oil light will come on according to these parameters.
From Rave...the light on the dash will illuminate when the psi is between 3.5-6.0
my setup was very custom and it would be interesting to get the adapter plate and get a reading from there and compare it to mine....
