Default Spare tire mount weight allowance

Hey all, this my first posting (hope I'm doing it correctly.)

I bought a 3 bike carrier that mounts on (through actually) the spare tire mount. Does anyone know the maximum weight it can handle safely?
It's an OSI Spare Tire Bike Rack #BT300 made by Surco Products Inc., if that matters any.

thanks

What do you think the weight of the bike and rack are? I used to carry a High Lift jack on my spare and that was really maxing out the door hinges and door latches capacity which is your main concern.

Yeah, stock tires I'm guessing. 255/55R18. The rack is about 30lbs and 2 adult bikes (which I have yet to purchase) and one child bike would probably be around...75-80lbs plus whatever the spare weighs...by the way, it's a 2002
disco II.

thx

Well, if you haven't purchased the bikes yet, try and get them as lightweight as possible. The weight itself is not the only factor here. You have to take the leverage effect into consideration also. Too bad you didn't get a hitch mounted bike carrier.

Unless you are going to go high bank on those bikes I would estimate the full weight to be too much for the spare mount unless used for short periods of time.

You can also take into consideration the fact that some people run steel wheels & 33"+ tires on that... that has to weigh considerably more then the bikes.

Or you can buy a bike mount that would fit into the trailor hitch receivor.

I have a friend who has a 265/75-16 spare tire and a 40 lb jerry can mounted on the rear of his '04 Disco. After about 50 off-road treks he notice his tire mount is cracked. He's gonna get rid of the jerry can carrier and have the tire bracket welded.

The spare carrier, much less the door hinges and latch won't handle the weight you are talking about. Get a bike carrier that mounts to the hitch.
