Default Speakers...again

Hello,

I asked a while back about some speakers and such. I've gotten to digging around online and all and at the local radio install place. Ive been looking at the component systems and im going to replace all the speakers first, then probably the radio head unit. One of my questions is...Are the tweeters in the A pillars next to the windshield or are they behind the 'Harmon Kardon' grilles on the door? I think there is sound coming from those 2" or 3" circles....I dont know the size...I'm guessing the tweeters are behind those grilles on the rear passenger doors. The local radio place also had some speaker adapters. I guess the speakers have a proprietary plug on them. Has anyone used these? They will probably make installation easier. Just looking for info on them.

Another question...do most people go through the factory amp when they install an aftermarket head unit? or is it easier to go bypass it and put an aftermarket full system amp in its place?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

It's probably best to go with a new amp if you are re-doing the entire system along with a new sub.

I'm not sure, but I would guess the tweeter is on the door with the speaker.

I haven't fully looked into the system, but once my headunit adapters come in I will be changing it out. Hopefully by the middle of the week.

Also where is the Factory amp located? Is it in the same place on all Disco II?

Hi there,
The speakers in the pillars or posts number 8 in the diagram are tweeters. The upper front door speakers number 6 are midrange and the lower front door speakers number 9 are for the bass. The tail door speakers number 13 are subwoofers, thats why they don't require the stereo imaging like all the others, any sound below 100hz is undirectional.

Hope this helps.

Yes it does, thanks.

Has anyone tried fitting an after market amp under the driver's seat? It looks like there should be enough room.

Awesome...that helps alot...I'm guessing people just disconnect the highline speakers (6) in the picture...I have the HK system in mine. Not very impressed with it. I've just not run across anything in the aftermarket world that suggests a speaker to replace it. Crutchfield.com just offers component speakers. I'm not sure where they fit the easiest, pillar or door. I'll have to tear into it one day and see what I can do...I would imagine an aftermarket amp would easily fit under the seat...perhaps even better under the passenger seat once the cd changer was removed. I believe that's all that is under that seat.

Thanks for the help

If you remove the factory amp you probably install a new amp there. The problem with the drivers seat is there is a little transmission computer mounted under the amp.

The plate and that device are mounted to a raised plate with the amp on top and the transmission device below. But you could probably still use the spot and just drill new mounting holes for the amp.

OR put the CD changer under the drivers seat if you still want to use it and put the amp under passenger seat.

There is plenty of room under the seats for probably almost and amp.

Hmm...sounds good...has anyone had any luck mounting a sub in that rear door housing? I crammed two cheapo speakers in there just to keep it from rattling b/c the factories had completely fallen apart...I see that JL Audio makes a 6" sub...with a 4 3/16" Mounting depth, requires .015 cu. ft of air space...300 watts peak. I dont know if these will fit in that back door sub enclosure or if its even worth messing with. They make the subs in a 4 and 8 ohm variety. Might be better, at least sound wise, to just put a 10 or 12 back there in its own enclosure and use the side storage boxes, where the jump seats would go...Just a thought.

I haven't tried, but the sizing for anything looks tight.

I guess you could attach a custom box to the back door. Although it still would take up some trunk space.

Either that or fix the sub box to where the storage containers sit.
