Need a little help here. Our Disco's brakes are squeeking every time we come to a stop...well, not every time, but it's dang sure close to every time. What's the deal? Do we just need new pads? On my Tahoe the brakes are set up so they squeek to give a warning before it's time to replace them...then they stop squeeking after a couple hundred miles and you know it's time to replace them. Any and all ideas are welcome? The car has 59,000 miles on it and it's a 2002 SE7. We bought it with 45,000 miles on the car and to my knowledge the brakes have never been replaced. Thank you in advance.

At 45,000 miles, they have been replaced and most likely with some cheep pads, probably with no sound deadening material being applied to the backs of the brake pads.
Time to consider starting over before you throw an ABS fault on top of the noise. Mike |

i've got the same issues on my rover. I am at 21k miles with the original or warranty replaced brake pads in the front and I am getting the squeaking too. I'm gonna have the dealer check the crap out next week when they replace all the other warranty parts i have....the great thing about this warranty i have, everything is covered (except oil changes) until 2009.

The easiest solution is to just pull the pads and spray the backs down with "brake squeel." It's a very tacky spray that dampens the vibration that causes the noise. Use it LIBERALY (I think it will even tell you to on the back of the can). That would be the cheapest solution, a can of the stuff is like $8.00 or something like that. I had a Ranger that had horribly noisy brakes and brake squeel fixed it every time.
Worth a shot, if that doesn't work then you may be looking at better pads (akebono, kevlar, etc.) But hey, what's $8.00 and an hours work?

I had this problem on our 2000 Discovery II. The squealing was very embarrassing, and we bought anti-squeal paste you squeeze out of a tube and applied it to the back of the pads per the instructions. It worked!
