Default Steering lock gremlin....

Hi All:

The gremlins on my Disco II have now also attacked the steering lock - I am unable to disengage it to start the car... Any ideas?

regards

How many miles on the truck, just thinkng about wear.
Have you tried turning the steering wheel hard to the left while trying to turn the key?
How easy is it to put the key in and out of the ignition?

Default Steering lock gremlin

Hi:

The van has 139000 kilometres (about 86,000 miles) on it. I replaced the MAF sensor at the local Landrover dealer today - at least now I can breathe clean air in my garage.

The steering lock is really annoying and frustrating me. I took the covers off, but there are so many wires, I am concerned that I may set the airbag off...

So back to my original question, have you tried turning the wheel while turning the key and do you have a problem puting in or taking out the key.
Do you have 2 kaeys, have you tried your other key, does your regular key show alot of tooth wear?

Hi Mike;

I have turned the steering wheel from side to side, very hard, very fast, as well as slowly and gently - all while turning the key similarly... No dice. The key, as well as the spare goes in smoothly - no problems.

It looks like I will have to get a locksmith out...

So the lock smith came out yesterday, took the lock off, and went away. 4 hours later he was back, and now the lock is as good as new. Costs was the ZAR equivalent of USD122. Seemed quite pricey to me.

In US $'s that is a pretty fair price. Do you have lots and lots of keys on your key ring? It is pretty common to wear out the tumbler assemby with too much weight dangeling from the ignition switch.
Glad you got it fixed.
