Default Stuck in Park - Replacing Safety Switch - Help!

While in park(and no radio on so I can hear) I push on the brake pedal, and I cannot hear the saftey switch disengage on the shifter. I took off the shifter covering and saw the golden cyclinder to the right of the shifter. I pressed the brake pedal and held my finger on this and did not feel or hear the clicking noise.

My friend has a Disco2 and I tested the same on his working shifting and have come to conclusion that my safety switch is gone. How easy is this to fix and what is the part called??? Thank you

Brake switch: it's behind the brake pedal and in an emergency it can be bypassed by jumping two wires.

Does you transmission shift into park with the brake pedal pushed down? Do your brake lights work?

We have the brake switch (I always carry one or two extra ones with me) and it's very easy to replace.

Oh no, not the dreaded listening for noises in car parks (in my case while eternally waiting for my wife to shop).
I do this so often and even while driving and generally I end up a nervous wreck imagining that the thing is about to disintegrate.

the thing is the brake lights do work, doesnt this rule out the brake switch?

The transmission is in park now and I can't shift out of it. You are supposed to hear that safety switch click when you depress the pedal do disengage the piece that locks the teeth in place so you can shift out of park

Seen a few shifters go bad.

If it is the switch its pretty cheap to fix.

push down on the brake pedal and pull it out and make sure to keep the pedal in until the new switch is installed.

Buy yourself a long two feet philips head screwdriver. It acts as a brake pedal depresser and can be used for other stuff.

So... I got a new brake switch... installed it... still doesn't do the clicking noise thing when the pedal is depressed. What else could this be? The only good thing is I can press the silver button underneath the shifter assembly to manually put it in reverse, drive , etc so i can at least drive it to the dealer if must be but i rather try to see if we can figure it out to save some cash. The brake lights still work too when i put it in drive manually like that too. This is pretty weird........ any ideas on what to try next?

The solenoid is probably bad. The fact that your brake lamps worked all along suggests that the brake switch was fine. The solenoid/acutator/shift interlock as they are called can sometimes fail- as apparently yours did.

I would also check all your fuses.....i think i read something about it in one of the "notes" in the owners manual, i suspect it's also hooked up to something else on the circuit so you may have another problem alltogether.....

later, Dean
