Is there any benefit to using synthetic oil in a DII? I was skimming throught the manual the other night for oil capacities on the rover and saw, that the manual actually reccomends 10W40. I've been using 5W30 and Castrol 5W30 and 10W30. Not sure what the dealer put in. I think the last time I aske they put in Penzoil 5W30 and when I first developed a constant lifter tick they put in 5W30 and told me to change the oil ever 3k. I'm like totally confused on what oil to use if I want to keep the rover for a long time and perform efficiently.
Walking through O'riely's I saw castrol 10W40 and wondered if I should not be using that instead. Temps we are seeing these days are unusual some days it goes down to the 30's or right back up to 80. I was wondering if the 10w40 might help stop the tapping sound I get on startup or if I need to do another engine cleaning? I've been using auto-rx as a maint dose of 3oz every oil change since about 36kmiles. I don't think I have much sludge but I guess It couldn't hurt.

For your area, 10/30W or 10/40W is fine. I use Castrol's Blend which is a partial synthetic, using a K&N 3001 oil filter and changing it every 3000 miles.
Synthetic is good but as dirty as Rover engines get you still need the more frequent oil changes and then it is hard to justify the cost of a pure synthetic. Mike |

I know all rovers leak but if conventional oil will keep the seals conditioned then that may just be what I stick with.
