My 2000 DII has now gone from my daily driver to my "hobby". We just added a 07 Jeep Commander as the family truck. I'm a little hard headed and just can't give my truck the boot after all the trouble I have on a pretty regular basis... Here's the new problem. I was driving and stopped for gas and noticed when I started it back up I had what seems to be a transmission fault. My Sport mode and Manual mode were illuminated in the dash and flashing green. All of the lights on the gear shifter were flashing as well. When I shifted through the gears, there was R N D and then the shifter slipped slightly within D as if there were two possible positions in the D position. I turned it off and then on again and everything was normal and has been.
Other things I've noticed... I changed the transmission fluid about a year ago (not a flush, and didn't change the filter). I rechecked the level and all seems fine. I have noticed a rumbling sound when I'm going about 40 mph (my driveshaft has been rebuilt and is checked regularly) I hear a whirring noise occasionally while parked and when I rev, when someone below is feeling the transmission/transfer case it feels like a 'grinding' inside. When I've been parked on a steep hill with the nose of the vehicle being lower, I notice a really noisy shift out of park into drive, like I can hear a jumbling metal sound for lack of better words.
I have about 150,000 miles on it and I imagine my transmission is on it's way out. It shifts really well still when I give it gas. It's always made a 'clunk' noise while I'm letting it drift and then put my foot back on the accelerator giving it gas- unless I am smooth and even with the pressure when I touch the accelerator again- not sure it's even related.
At this point, should I be thinking about a new transmission, or a clogged filter or something? Where do I start on this one?

Had it checked at the beginning of the year. Care to elaborate your thoughts?
One thing I forgot to mention, while I feel no loss of power or sluggish shifting, the way it drives right now reminds me of the way it feels when you're pulling a small trailer or like it's under a load.
Thanks,
A bad battery or alternator leads to the M+S lights and the tranny going into limp mode.
I do have a battery that is being drained of power until I have the computer for the SLS reprogrammed. Thanks for the info. That explains the limp mode. Is it likely I have a clogged tranny filter that is causing the other problems?

WOW not more stuff.....I'm sorry. First engine, now Trans? Let's hope not, sounds more related to the voltage with the M+S indicators.
I think I'm going to get a personalized license tag that has the word LEMON on it. My husband swears he's going to push it off a cliff somewhere, lol. I keep telling him after all the repairs it'll be like I have a new truck! Guess I've become a little too attached to it.
If the tranny filter has never been replaced then you should do it, with a tranny oil change + a bottle of Lucas transmission additive. Your tranny will be happier with a new filter. It is a fairly simple and mildy messy job.
I think you got into limp mode when the voltage dipped and caused the M+S lights to illuminate, thus limp mode....causing shifting like issues. Especially, if it hasn't returned. Start simple and check for loose batt & alt connections, correct voltage at the alternator, battery and clean all grounds. I'm just thinking voltage not transmission issue. Trans flush, filter and fill is a good idea if it hasn't been done before. (filter)

FYI, I'm helping spread this link around for State Farm
There is still a problem even though it kicked into limp mode, that issue self corrected by restarting the engine. I still have the whirring noise, feeling of it being under load, rumbling sound at around 40 - 50 mph, noise it makes taking it out of park on an incline. I'm convinced there is still a problem, I am used to what it sounds like- so when I hear or feel something new I am pretty keen on noticing new issues. I think I'll start by putting in a new filter and fresh fluid, not sure I want to flush things about at this point though. Any other thoughts are appreciated.
Just a thought on parking on inclines and declines, put your parking brake on and take your foot off the brake before (as long as your parking brake is in good working order) putting it in park so it carries the load rather than your transmission.
If you haven't already, pull the relay and fuse for the SLS, both located under the hood by the battery. That should help with the battery being drained.
