Default Tapping engine noise

Hi,

I am new to the forum. I have a '03 DISCO II. It is making a tapping noise @ idle it goes away after a reach 30 plus m/h, it seemd to me that comes from the back of the engine between top an bottom. I have a friend that owns a shop so we have tried diferent things. At first I though that it was not getting enough oil to the rocker arms, or lifters could not hold the oil. So we replaced the lifters, oil pump, push rods and rocker arms. But guess what affter expinding close to $2500 the noise is still there. I don't want to take it to the dealer, I got in to i fight over stuff the said they change but they didn't. The rover has 75000 miles and is a V8 4.6, all maintanence has been done since I bought it (0 miles). Any body have a suggestion of what this !@#$ noise could be. By the way the engine light came on once and it said a miss fire on cylindre #6, we reset the alarms and the light has not come back on since then. DISCO runs good, just the noise is anoing. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

This may be a dumb question, but did you change the exhaust manifold gaskets? A lot of engine ticking noises have been related to exhaust manifold leaks on Rovers.

No I haven't, there is any way to check if the gasket is leaking? Thank for the reply.

No broken exhaust studs?
You might want to pull the oil pan and inspect the oil pick up tube, they plugs up. Have you done a mechanical oil pressure test at the oil pump?
How about a broken flax plate, they can get noisey?

Hi Mike,

I don't see any broken studs. I have check the oil pick up tube and it was clean and also check the flex palte or at least what i canse of it and it looks ok. I have not done a oil preasure test. Do I need a special tool or cqan I use a regular oil presure reader? I haven't seen the oil light came up, that would indicate low oil preasure, right?

Jeremy.

Jeremy..one of the best ways to check for an exhaust leak is to use your hands...when the engine is cold start her up and quickly, carefully run your hands or fingers arounds the manifold opening ie; head to manifold / manifold to pipe junctions etc.....you will feel the hot exhaust air pulsing on your skin...just be carefull not to burn yourself...you don't have to be touching the parts, just kinda real close.....

The other thing you can do is use a set of spark plug boot pliers and remove one plug wire at a time...so you remove the wire for a second and listen how the noise/ engine changes than re-install it, then move to the next cylinder and do the same..listen and see if it's the same as the first one etc....BE WARNED the engine light will probably come on with miss fire codes so you will have to have them cleared!!!

This will tell you pretty quick if it's internal and at what cylinder.....later, Dean

If you look above, I believe, the oil filter you should see a place where you can thread in a hose and guage. This is the best way to get a better idea on your noise if it is oil pressure related.
