Smile thermastat problems?

My 2003 Disco 60700 Miles Has A Quirk... My Thermastat On Dash Cluster Is Fowling... Engine Shows No Signs Of Overheating... Needle Jumps To Top And Sets Off Little Red Light... Ses Comes On Steady...needle Then Drops To Bottom Stays For Any Amount Of Time ...then It Will Creep To Middle And Light Goes Off... Ses Stays O Couple Days Provided The Gauge Doesnt Fowl Agn. We Have Had The Dealer Check And They Have Replaced Sender On Top Of Motor...twice...just Had The Head Gasket And Radiator Replaced At 600000mile Service... Replaced Sender Agn And Fowled First Week We Had It Back... Thanks In Advance For Your Thoughts!

Your dealer is missing something, have you been loosing any coolant or had any gurling sounds coming from the dash?

2 possible things come to my mind.....either air in the system or the water pump is not working properly [something like the impeller is not spinning at higher RPM]

Either way...to the dealer you go...as Mike suggests, they are missing something....

Sounds like an electrical gremlin to me. Since they have replaced the sensor (3X) it's probably OK. The sensor is connected to the engine control module (ECM). The ECM also drives the temperature gauge. It could be anywhere between the sensor and the ECM including wiring, connectors, or the ECM input port it's connected to. Since the red light and the SES lamp are coming on the ECM is definately getting bad data. Maybe a new ECM is in your future. Like Mike said, the dealer is missing something. They haven't fully diagnosed it yet.

Just my $0.02 ...

Rover doesn't recommend replacing the plug wires cause of the cost and it makes them look like that can't supply a product that lasts. Manufactures are judged by the cost of their vehicles maintance so they want to keep it low, $800 to $1000.

I Thought It Was Crazy They Did Not Replace All Ignition Wires When I Had I Towed To Vegas To Fix #6 Wire ... They Just Replaced The One Wire...i Guess Warrantee Only Covers Broken Part ... It Just Seems Dumb. Do You Guys Think I Could Wait A While Till I See The Dealer On This Gauge Problem ... I Would Like To Take It To The Saltlake Dealer I Bought The Truck From... I Liked Them Better Than Vegas.... It Is 300 Miles And It Might Be A Month Before I Can Get There... As Long As I See No Heating Problems I Should Be Ok ???
