thanks for the feedback guys. to answer some of the questions, yes, I would try to sell off the classic if I got the disco II. I am not really looking at older ones - likely just 04's to make purchase of an extended warranty a little cheaper.
as for why to change from the classic to a newer disco, In our garage the rover is not a daily driver right now. it serves as backup when the audi is in the shop, and serves as an additional 4wd when the BMW wont go in the snow. the offroadability is pretty cool, but I have not gotten terribly into it yet. the disco would likely get driven more putting the monster allroad into the"fun" car category and letting me haul the kids and dog around day to day in the disco. We'd also use the disco for long road trips to go visit the inlaws etc - something I am not comfortable doing in the classic. Okie's idea of spending to refurb the classic weighs heavily on my mind. spending the money I'd spend on an '04 disco on the classic would make the classic one hell of a truck. that said the money would be sunk on the truck as i would NEVER get it out of there, and It likely would still not be as reliable as a low mile '04. Not sure what to do. I have an auto broker looking around for a disco for me. We'll see what he comes up with. he really doesnt want to sell me a rover due to reliability concerns. After a heavily modified audi and a 250K mile RR Classic, how bad can an under warranty disco be?

I get so tired of hearing about the unreliability of the Disco's, I just do not agree. At any rate, maybe this will make you feel a little bit better about the 04 purchase.
http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Re...odel=Discovery Sounds like for what you are thinking, the Disco would make sense over the RRC. Good luck!

I thought I'd go to some expense of upgrading the bumpers and such for the Disco but I'm thinking any money to modify will be spent on the Classic. My daughter (age 16 who drives the Classic) has since been hit from behind and hit someone in the front while driving MY Disco. SO both bumpers are smashed up a bit. And I really don't have 2000$ to put new bumpers on her. I plan on keeping the Classic as long as I can maintain her with upgrades and parts. |

How about an ultra reliable Subaru?
2004 Subaru Forester - Reliability Ratings - MSN Autos How about a Toyota Truck? 2004 Toyota Tundra - Reliability Ratings - MSN Autos Oh, cannot forget about the old Honda stand by. 2004 Honda CR-V - Reliability Ratings - MSN Autos I know which 2004 vehicle I would buy.

Hell yeah I rather have a rover! My Subaru was a POS too.
By the way, Okie's idea about buying a 2001 or 99 was the way I went. I paid cash for both of them. I figured if I ran into any repair issues, at least I would not have a monthly payment. So since it turns out that my vehicles have been so reliable, I am putting the money into modifications now. I might agree about what Okie said about the 99, for some reason, it just feels put together better than my 01 and other newer Disco's I have been in. Another good vehicle I have owned was a 1994 Audi 90, put 180,000 miles on it before selling it to my sister a few years ago. Still going strong and looks new both inside and out. My mothers 2003 Audi All-Road is sweet, but it has been in the shop quite a bit.

yeah, the subaru's just dont do it for me. I have thought about a 4runner, but I like the rovers better. the 99 isnt a bad concept but will be way past any warranty, and at that point I may as well just keep the classic. as for the audi's well, I have lots of history there. love those cars. My allroad has spent a total of about 12 weeks in the shop this year. but that included 2 separate 5 week stretches where some major modifications were undertaken. And like most of you all ready know, one mod brings on more, and more, and more. So I continue to plan for more shop time. If Audi had brought the new RS4 avant to the US, I'd be all over that instead. I have debated about a Q7. but once I start looking at new, big trucks then the payment situation gets nuts.

Yeah, hope its not too good to be true as in perhaps its been wrecked or something. But keep your fingers crossed.
Also, my suggestions above concerning the Japanese cars were sarcastic. My point being that the 2004 Disco shows no problems, but all the 2004 Japanese do, yet everybody tells us these vehicles are unreliable. All machines break, but I do think the rovers are durable and will last longer than most other vehicles as long as they are maintained. Also I might mention we have a 1985 Audi 4000 that has been in the family passed on from parents to kids to now grand kid. Its odometer broke several years back with around 500,000 miles on it, I cannot tell you how many pizzas that car has delivered in its life time, that car was built to last as is that 94 Audi. I do not see many auto makers doing that any more, in fact I think the Rover is about the last company to do it(with the Defender certainly).
