Default tick tick tick

I have mentioned this problem a couple of times, but I thought I would offer some more details and see what you all have to say...I have a ticking sound that sounds to me like a lifter tap...It seems to be coming from the driver side of the enginge under the valve cover. It makes the sound whether its hot or cold. It gets faster the higher the RPM's go. Against my better judgement I put some "gunk" in it that a friend recomended that is supposed to quiet noisy lifters, but it did nothing...This is my first Disco, but it still sounds like a lifter tap...If it is a lifter, is there a fix besides a full blown valve job? Let the discussion begin!!

How many miles on the engine, what oil and weight are you using and when do you notice it, hot or cold?

Default re tick

Hey DiscoMike!
Unfortunatley I do not know when i started....I have only had it 2 weeks and it was doing that when I bought it. I am using Penzoil full synthetic 10w30 oil in it. It has 166k miles and it does it all the time hot or cold...

Regards,
Phil

Hey DM,
I went back and read some old threads, and watch a few youtube videos. My tick sounds exactly like this, just on the driver side....

If it does it hot and cold, it will most likely be a lifter or cam or both.

I know that noise. It's an exhaust leak at the Y-pipe !! Change your gaskets.

Yep, it always sounds like a lifter.

Nope, the only LR group I've been able to find "near" here is the NC LR group. Too far for my taste. I find it amazing since like 1 out of every 4 cars on the road in charleston is a LR.

Then again, I can't find any trails around here either so, I'm not really that awesome at the LR thing.

I've got exactly this problem.....2003 Disco with 60K miles on it. I spoke to the dealer (I know....I know....) and they said if it's a cam it's a $4K repair, if it's a lifter it's $2500, and if it's gaskets it's @$2K. Yikes.

How difficult a DIY is this?

If it's this gasket ($8.95) it is easy.
You have options:
$100 at Midas muffler or two hours in the driveway.
