Default Tire Size? For a Newbie?

All-
At the behest of my sweet wife, I have purchased, as of today a 2003 Disco HSE7 from a couple in DC. I will post some pics soon I promise. I am no stranger to wrenching and am in fact a huge fan of the Land Cruiser, and also have an 82 Jeep Scrambler. Enough of that though...this rig has curiously large rims (18s), and I do not currently have the 'kitchen pass' to replace them with 16s. Is there such thing as a MT/AT or ANYTHING more aggressive than a Pirelli Scorpion available to me? One last thing, what is the largest tire size I can run on this thing without a lift kit? I have a feeling changing tire size may open a few doors. Please...suggestions are most welcome as my wife will not yet allow many mods beyond a roof rack and ladder!

All the best,
Todd

I am not sure, I know that BFG makes their AT's that will fit on the 18's if you have a 2inch lift, just check out their site. They make a really good AT tire. Cooper makes a MT for the 18...if you have a 2 in lift. I just think these tires would be too big for a stock disco. Another good AT is nitto terra grapler and also toyo open country at's. I think they make a size that fits the disco stock. Use a tire size calc on line and compare it to the stock tires and also compare it to 245/75/16 because I know they fit on a stock disco. I am sorry I don't know the exact size you are looking for, but those three all terrain tires are going to be good. I have the nittos on my 18's for road use and have used them on the trail and they are surprisingly good offroad. do a search, i am sure you can come up with something.

the bfg at's are 265/65 18 which is 31.5 inches
the stock tire size as well as the toyo open country at and the nitto terra grappler is 255/55 18: 29 inches

I have the same truck and just got (1000 miles ago) the TOYO Open Country A/T and they are awesome... Quiet on the highway and great traction on and off road...

General Grabber AT2's come in 255/55R18 AND 255/60R18, which by my guess should fit alright at 30" Diameter.

I'd recommend a suspension upgrade of somekind in the future. My 02' had fairly average milage on it and the front suspension was completely worn and thus collapsed 2".

I have the 265/65R18's on a 2" lift. Its difficult to say if they would fit stock suspension. Maybe if no off-roading were involved ?

They wouldn't have fit on my truck stock with my old worn suspension.

I told my wife if the Land Rover goes, so do I. That shut her up.

ya i dont know if the bfg's will rub. if you find out let me know! ive heard they would. the only reason i want tires with good traction is because i go mudding so i dont need much flex. but everyone says that the bfg's wouldnt fit without trimming or rub :/

I have recently fitted a set of General Grabber AT2's 255/55R18 and they compare well with the performance I used to get from the BFG's I had fitted to my 110. By staying with the Factory size I have no clearance problems and the only down side is not so much flex in the side walls as you get with a taller profile tyre.

All-
Thank you all for the COMPLETE replies and advice. I have decided to stay with the stock size given that there is no way my wife is going to allow me to lift this rig any time in the immediate future. I have decided to get a set of Nitto Grappler A/Ts as they are only $138 apiece from discounttiredirect.com, and no this is not an ad. That said, I am about to ask a lot of idiotic questions on this bb...so stay tuned.
Cheers everybody!
