Question Towing capacity

Thinking about buying a 1999 Disco 2. Need to tow a large boat, 5500, - 5700 lbs. Trailer has its own brakes. Any personal experience on wether this would be safe, and is this possible?

You are right in the gray area. If you are are talking about long tows, in the mountains, you won't be happy.
Short hops on flat land and you should be fine.

I have towed a similiar weight load (ML320 and trailer) granted mine is a Range Rover Classic but it's almost identical with the chassis. The weight doesn't really present a problem as long as your ok with driving 55 mph or a little slower. Braking was fine for me I just planned out my stops in advance lol. You will end up with a bit of sway though going down hill as the trailer tries to push. The tail wagging the dog so to speak.

It's very doable for trips on level ground or that aren't long distance. I wouldn't want to fight that sway though for a long distance on hilly ground at all. The wheel base is just a tad short on these rigs for heavy load towing.

I have just purchased and towed a 26' travel trailer (in 100 degree temps) that is between 5000 and 5500 lbs. and I have had no issues, even in the mountainous raods here in New Mexico... The fastest I travel is 65mph and really try to stay at 60mph. on the interstates... Then again, I have an '03 HSE7 Disco., so we are not in identical in trucks...

IMO, as long as you have brakes and a properly set brake controller, a friction sway, and a proper ball and ball mount, you shoulld be fine. Watch your temperature and I suggest a cooling flush with a max of 35% dex-cool and adding a pint of purple ice.

Good luck and be safe!
