Default Traction Control/diff Lock

Spent some time at a Land Rover Experience site last weekend, did a recovery course...overheard a trainer tell a Level 1 customer that Land Rover felt that traction control was an improvement on the old diff lock system...The poor guy has a 2000 Disco II (no cdl).

I drive a 2005 Disco II and it has a cdl. And my experience with cdl has been fantastic . I had a 2001 Disco II (no cdl) and it was Ok...(If you know of nothing better).
I have found that cdl greatly improves driving on gravel and really makes off-road effortless.

Has the trainer just said what the customer wants to hear? What would the options be for and older Disco II....activate the cdl or ARB rear air locker?

IMOGEN, the 2000 DII should have the CDL (Mine does) - just no lever in the cabin. Search this site for a few options for hooking it up.

The 03 had a greatly improved T/C over the earlier models, but still not as good as a CDL.

The transfer cases on earlier and later DIIs have the spigot for attaching the CDL lever.

As far as I know from 2002 until 2003 this spigot was not on the Transfer Case and there is a blanking plate over that area, only way to check is to feel for it or use a mirror on a stick

See attached - the spigot is the part that has 3 bolts around it

Well trying to attach a pic but keep on having to log in again ... and again ... and again etc will try and do it separately

Attempt no 2

Earlier DII's up to 2001 had the CDL spigot on the transfer case, however from 2002 up to early 2004 this is not the case, but later 2004 models have the spigot and some with the CDL lever attached

Best way to check is to feel for the spigot on the Transfer case or use a mirror on a stick whilst the vehicle is up on a ramp

Do you need a lever to use the CDL, I have a 99 DII?

You can get the LR one from Ashcrofts in the UK or Expedition Exchange in the US

There are other cheaper home made alternatives

Early 01 here w/ CDL and a local LR Tech install a "pull lever" reachable from
Pass side under door. Works great. 100USD for the work.

You don't have to use a lever - but crawling under the truck with a wrench in thick mud isn't always fun.....
