Default trailer light receptacle adapter

I've searched this topic, and have found many threads on wiring a trailer harness.... But haven't found any on where to find an adapter for the factory installed 7pin/prong receptacle that came on my 2000 DII. The generic 7pin adapter at the local parts store does not fit (big shocker there!)

Is it going to be cheaper to just jerk the original one out and re-wire the more common receptacle?? (7-blade) How hard is it to match up those wires??

Cheers.

I had to put a 7 pin to trailer a brake assisted rig on the back, it was a pain, but it can be done. I think that the original socket that is mounted is actually a 6 or a 5 pin. It might have 2 grounds or a dedicated return, something weird like that...
I had to mount a modulator for the brake, got that from an RV shop.
I don't remember exactly what I had to do, but I remember that I left the original socket and used those little blue clip on "splitters" to get there
You'll need to trace the functions of the pins, and if you need the brake assist, I had to steal the signal from the brake lights. everything works now, but it took a few hours, a test light and the help of a friend to do this.
Good luck.

Please!!! make your life easy, go online or to the dealer buy the factory wiring kit, install that then buy the 4-pin factory adapter. that can be rewired to meet any need you will have, get the wire color chart on line or from the dealer. It looks clean and you don't blow other stuff.

Is it the old British style socket with the round pins?

I started again from scratch with mine. Subaru wiring harness fits the same as Land Rover for a lot less cost. Spend the $10 and buy a new 7 pin flat blade socket from Walmart or wherever and just copy the wiring from your trailer plug if you don't have access to a diagram. If you need the brake module, these can be bought anywhere- just run a live to it from the battery with a 20 amp constant reset fuse and ground it. Run the Blue wire back to your new socket.

Hope this helps.

It's already got the factory wiring (at least I assume so, it's got a Land Rover logo on the cap).

I think I'll be replacing the original one with the standard 7 blade RV receptacle. If anyone has access to a diagram that explains which wire is what, I'd love to see it. I'll be sure to take photos for anyone else who may need help with such a project.

Ok... just pulled the existing plug out to have a look at wires. While I was at it, I looked at the "trailer wiring plug" that's found behind the passenger tail light assembly. It appears that the plug (the one behind the tail light) in my disco II has had several wires cut.... I hope that's not as bad as news as it sounds.

On the existing plug I find seven wires:

Blue
Yellow
Orange
Red
Green
White

And a Brown one in the center of the six mentioned above. So now I'm hunting for a list that details which wire does what.

Pics if you're interested can be found here:
