Default transmission and engine oil fluid levels

call me dumb but I've read about checking the fluids in my 02 Disco and I would like to know how do I check the fluid level for my tranny? Or can I?

Thanks all

Well that 1st post says it all, are you going to be doing your fluids? Maintance on that truck is pretty basic, just use the owners manual as a guide and do more frequent oil changes, like every 3999 miles.
Good luck with you truc.

A similar procedure holds for the front and rear diff but use Mobil 1 75/90 or so gear oil ( you can choose something similar if you prefer). This gear oil smells stongly of sulphur by the way. It has sulphur in it to cope with the high gear pressures.

See what condition the oil is coming out. If it's black you have small metal filings in it (Normal in early changes), unlike engine oil where the black is from carbon from the combustion process. I'd suggest changing it again at your next engine oil change in about 5 kmiles or so. It's really easy, mine is clean even after 10k miles or more between diff changes. The front diff essentially runs backwards i.e. on the other side of the gear teath compared to the rear and usually has more particles in it. I change one every other engine oil change or so, ie say at 25000 miles engine oil + front diff, 30k + rear diff, 35k + front diff. This puts the interval at about 10k you could make a similar plan for the interval you choose. I think LR recommeds 30k or so for front and rears.

Don't forget the center diff this is significantly more awkward to get to I'd ask your mechanic to do this one. It uses the same oil as the front and rear diffs.
