Dean,
I would also suggest a good engine flush with 6 qts. of ATF, a throttle body clean and induction cleaning.
You might want to consider getting the Magnacor 8mm plug wires and a new set of the Bosch Fusion plugs made with Iridium.

Default if you wanted to replace the spark plug cables

How do you reach that distributor cap behind the v-8? I have a 1999 Disco II.
I plan on changing the plugs but would like to know how to reach the distributor cap to replace the cables if need be.

Thanks- Mark

One quick option is to SQUEEZE your hands back there. I thought it was impossible, but I did it...took about an hour and a half and a few . Also took a week for my hands to heal up, but worth it.
Another option is have you wife and kids do it for you
Final option is a little more complicated, I'll let someone who has done it explain it a little better.
It is definantly possible, I don't have HUGE hands, but I definantly don't have small hands by any means.

Cool

That was funny. Thanx, at least I know it has been done!
My wife laughed when I read your post to her!
Maybe this site should have busted knuckle photo gallery!
I changed the oil for the first tim on my DII and only got a few scratches.
I may spend a few dollars and buy "Magnacor 8mm plug wires and a new set of the Bosch Fusion plugs made with Iridium". I don't care too much about how it looks but I want the truck to be tuned. I have a slight misfire now and then at idle. The last 2 times I had the dealer tune it and that corrected it. I think I want to start doing the work myself, like I did in the good ol days with my '68 Mustang and my '72 Ford Van. Thanks for the tips! I may get fancy do the beers before, do martini afterwards!

Can someone elaborate on this technique. I've heard of adding one quart, but how do you fit six quarts into the engine? Do you run the engine on straight ATF fluid? Is that safe?

The smart thing would be to stay away from the Voodoo magic and stick with the Champions that came from the factory.

At BEST the Voodoo will work as well as OE.

Default Plug wires!!!

I just did mine the hard way, but it was worth it. If you are mechanically inclined should not be a problem. Unplugged all sensors attached to the manifold, T-body intake boot out then remove the manifold bolts and remove the 2 nuts that hold the coil bracket in place and push it back. Make sure to install a new upper intake gasket and cover all the exposed intake runners with masking tape to prevent dropping anything into the engine. On mine I used STI wires and NGK Platinum, that's what my LR mechanic uses and they work fine . While you are at it, ck your valve cover gaskets and replace if necessary......you'll have to do all that work just to get to them later if need it.

Good Luck!!!

Thanks guys. I'm glad I read this before leaving the office for NAPA. I will get the Champions then.I may go ahead and spring for the manual just in case. I saw one some where for $150. I went yesterday to take a look at a plug and accidentally pulled the cable right out of the connector (rubber "shroud") on one of the plugs! I believe that means it is broken! I put it back. The truck started up, it sounded ok, but I drove the wife's Miata to work just in case! Maybe I will just replace one wire the bloody knuckle easy way, then go back and do the rest the right way!

Well again your big mouth is making a fool of yourself. 20 or 25 years ago both Mercedes and Audi show deaqlers how to do this to correct lifter noise and other issues.
If you are a mechanic, which I believe you are, then stay under the hood and quit making such a fool of yourself.

Well I bought the Champions. Does Gap of .040 sound right? I was surprised the cable set did not come with a coil cable. The box was worn so maybe it was pilfered. So I told the guy, I didn't want the $109 Beldon Brand (he said they had no other). I will go out and get a different set at Advanced Auto Parts.

you have distributorless ignition system.

at 60k we just install the OEM plugs unless you got a misfire or head gasket or intake gasket leak then we might replace a wire or two thats heat damaged but usally not.

Im in the business of doing the least amount of work for the max efficiency. if a wire isnt bad and no misfire dont bother unless you want to have alot fun doing working your butt off.

if you have secondary air its alot worse.

A fool of myself? Mike, You seriously want to compare resumes? Your posts are about 50% inaccurate. I dont say anything about those. I only comment when there is a chance that your innaccurate information would damage someones stuff.

Stay under the hood...... I will. As long as your promise to stay OUT from under the hood.

Actually, Let me save you the trouble of typing your response....I'll do it for you.
If you dont know, I'm not going to explain it. You must not be a very good mechanic.

There.... Did it for you.
