Both times my front driveshaft needed repair, it wasn't visible until dropping the shaft and looking closely while moving the u-joints through their range of motion. First one was on warranty at 17K miles, second was at 42K miles and could have been warranty- but I went ahead and just rebuilt it.

Material cost to rebuild the front prop:

$20 x 3 for spiders = $51 (advance auto) Neapco brand
$32 x 1 for center ball kit (rockauto.com) Precision brand

ok, $83

FWIW, I've been told that Spicer doesn't make the spiders (cross) for the prop anymore.

They don't make them anymore, but there's a lot of stock of them left in some places. They're a good bit more expensive than neapco, but I've always used spicer stuff. I don't know if the advance stuff is good or not, but probably anything is better than the originals. Once you factor in the shipping from buying those online- it's a little more. The local parts shop gets $35 for the ball kit.
