Default U joint replacement time?

Hey guys,

I've asked a million questions already. But everytime I start moving on one item I read something else that seems more urgent to tackle.

I was/am all set to change some fluids this weekend when reading up on the u-joint deal got me to sweating. Just got my 2000 Rover, and judging by the candy and miniature toys imbedded in the back seats, I'd say a soccer mom had it. Looks to be regularly serviced(sticker on window for next) but I'm sure they didn't do all the stuff you guys suggest.

I just crawled under looking for the U joints and I see this. Even though it's rubber, being cracked cant be good.

Also in the last pic of the joint, there seems to be a good look above it. Oil?

can I pull this off myself and take it to a driveline shop is it? What should I tell them?

Also, what is the tube(vacuum attachment looking thingy) to the right of the power steering reservoir? It seems to be missing a nut and loose.

Yes, you can take the dive shaft off yourseld and take it in, make sure to use a little paint on each end so that when you reinstall the rebuilt shaft, you can help keep it balanced by putting it back in the same spot.
Just tell the shop to replcae and repair the drive shaft using greasiable u-joint and replace the boot.
Get an estimate first, if it is over $260 they are taking advantage of you.
The part that you are asking about is the air intake from the l/f wheel well to the air filter.
