Default U-Joints

My vehicle is in the shop getting new head gaskets. I would just get under it if I could. My question is, how many u-joints do I need when replacing them. I have found front and rear online, just need to know how many. the reason I am confused. 1. I am new to Land Rovers. 2. I saw another post that DISCO II needed 5?

These are the parts I found. While we find your parts, please enter your ZIP Code at PartsAmerica.com I am drivng a 1999 Dicsovery II. Thank you for any information that can be given.

I am driving 2000 miles next month, moving to LA area from KC, with a trailer. I am sure that the current u-joints do not have zerts. I have looked at one of them, and it looked very old, my guess 70,000 miles without any maintenance. I am paying for not understanding what to look for before I bought, but I still love it!!

Like I said, I am not too lazy to get under there, but I am trying to order the parts to have them waiting when the head gasket is replaced and she is home!

I believe you need five. Also a center kit for the double cardon joint on the front drive shaft. I think they are all the same part number.

Well I have a 2001 and I have 3 u-joints on the front driveshaft and 1 on the back at the t-case and a rotoflex at the axle.
I believe yours is the same.

I just order the parts and centering kit called out here.
The Scoop on U-joints - DiscoWeb Message Boards

Mine are also from Parts America / Advanced Auto site.
Not know anything about the GMB u-joints.

You need 3 for the front, U-joint P/N 1-0005 from Neapco. These are greasable and Carquest carries the. For the double cardon in the front you need a centring ball P/N 7-0081NG Neapco make as well.

For the back there is only one U-joint and a rubber coupling at the shaft/axle. I just ordered one from land rover for like 130.

I used this link to follow while rebuilding my front. Its easy, and the tools I rented from Canadian Tire for nothing.
gunna do the back once I get the coupling.

I didn't realize there is only one on the back driveshaft. I will have to check it out.

If you are going to do it right, you need 4 u-joints, al;l the same part number, 1 centering ball joint and a rotoflex.
Who is going to do the work?

I checked out the rear drive shaft while under there checking for the cdl. Didn't realize that it uses a rotoflex. Should I be able to get a rotoflex from a local NAPA, Carquest or Advance Auto?

Default Work

I was actually thinking about doing the work myself. I downloaded some step by step instructions that were posted on here by another member. I also have the Rave CD.

I would have done the head gasket job myself but I needed a licensed mechanic to do it for legal reasons. The place I got the vehicle from is going to be investigated.

First, how many miles on your truck, and are there any cracks between the bolts on the rotoflex. If it is cracking, go to Rover Connection and order their rotoflex, those that can be purchased from the local statre are cheap and don't last long.

Even with good detailed directions, there are few people that will tackle the double cardon's 2 joints and special tools are really a must.
