Default Vacuum Noise

I drive a 2001 Discovery, when I start the Rover, i hear a noise coming from under the hood. To me it sounds like it is some kind of vacuum line. Does any one have any idea what it might be?

Does it whine for a few minutes, and then go away? If this is the case, it is secondary air I think. There has been some discussion recently on this.

Yeah it only makes the noise for a minute or two, and then it stops.

Mine does the same thing when I first start up in the morning. It's the Secondary Air Injection and it runs for about 2 minutes then quits. I've been told it's a polution device but don't really know what it's purpose is (gotta keep the greenies happy I guess). Maybe someone who knows more about it can enlighten us.

Right after I posted that, I noticed that other thread that was discussing the same thing. From what I understand, it isn't really a big deal. Right?

I'm not too worried about it, especially since i'm not the only one w/ the sound.

Not at all. If your truck is equipped with SAI it's normal.

Is the secondary air superior to a Disco II without it?

I don't have seconday air. There is just a space there.

Should you / can you spend money to upgrade it?

HELL NO!!!!

It adds weight and "reduces" emissions at startup. Nobody really cares (do they?)

Then again, it is your truck. You CAN put it in there and get the ECU from a truck with secondary air, but there is no good reason.
