Guys, my truck is still seeping a tiny bit, and the dealer had put 5W30 in there last month when they did the front gasket job. After the job, the Disco stayed completely dry for 2 weeks, then, as the temperature got warmer, it started to seep again.
Since spring is here and the weather will keep getting warmer, I'm kind of hoping that if I put 10w40 in the engine, the thicker oil might stop the seeping (almost like 5W30 in colder weather). I'm also wondering if it's worth it to use synthetic oil in there. I'm kind of reluctant to use it, especially if it causes it to seep more. Is it true, that synthetic oil has smaller molecules that will cause a vehicle to leak even more??? And also, what grade should I use ??? As I said, I was planning on using 10W40 is that right???? |

Steph,
The weight of oil won't effect the leak, it will still leak with 20/50W. If the dealer repaired the leak within the laqst year, take it back to him and have ir repaired under warranty. Then start running synthetic in it if you want. Mike |

No problem with 10-40....i run Castrol Semi Synthetic 10-40 in mine for the summer...winter i switch to 5-30 full synthetic [ i think it got Motul as it was on sale...lol..]. You can get it Steph at CTC but you have to buy it in 1L bottles, they don't usualy have it in the 4L jug???
That reminds me...time for mine too!!! later, Dean |

Steph, as for your leak....Mike is correct, 1 year parts/labour....drive it a few more days and then take it back....the oil seapage/leak should be quite visible by then. If they still insist that there is no leak call me at work next week and i'll go over the truck with you at my work and we'll see for ourselves....
Later, Dean |

On the other hand... my leak stopped when I started using 15w-40 Rotella T.
Never checked out the leak, but there are no new spots on the garage floor. and NO... I'm not just out of oil! hahahaha

I would hope so...15-40 is pretty thick stuff and Rotella T is diesel spec oil [thicker than gas oil], not that it makes that much difference [just has different additives, more cleaners etc.....i have run the 0-40 in my deisel for the winter...good stuff!!!].
Curious though...how dirty is the oil when you change it??? just want to know if it's keeping the inside of the engine cleaner..... |

My mechanic reports great luck with the stuff. I get my oil changed every 2 to 3k because I only commute 6 miles each way per day and I'd like to keep the ECR 4.6 as well cared for as possible.
The oil gets a little dark as I monitor levels between changes, more so than when I had the LR dealer do it. I'd imagine it would be pretty dark... but I don't do greasy hands.... patients don't like it! hahaha! I know I could wear gloves while I worked on the truck... just not that into it.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll wait to take it to the dealer then, since it still has the dye that the independant mechanic put in it last week. I'll just go get 2 cans of brake cleaner and clean the whole engine real good. Then it'll be quite clear where it leaks from. I say this cause when I went to the garage last thursday, it was pretty hard telling exactly where the leak was from, since there was still dye on the engine from when the dealer had put some in to locate the front gasket leak. So by cleaning the residual dye from the engine it should be easier to locate.
And thanks 6cuda6, I'll definitely accept your offer. |

MIKE......I am about to change my oil (from Amsoil 20/50 to Valvoline 10/30).
After 8K miles the Amsoil still looks pretty clean. I can tell that there is contamination however, by the smell. I suspect that I could run it for a few more Ks as the truck rarely runs under 80 MPH. I intend to go bak to Amsoil, I just want to see how Valvoline does in the Landy's engine. Are you still using K&N oil filter? how is it holding up? what size are you using?

I am using the K&N 3001 which is the larger of the 2 offered for the Rovers.
I wouldn't run that long on the oil even if it looks clean only because of the excess build up of gas in the crank case, thats just me though. As for the Vavoline, I run their partial synthetic cause I still do the 3000 mile oil changes, never gone full synthetic and have thought about doing a couple of changes using the synthetic and see how well it hold up. Amsoil makes a very well defined case for using their motor oil longer. I have kept it in my car for as long as 10K miles. Amsoil said you can run it to 15K. I agree with you that the Landy fouls the oil faster than average. The Valvoline I am putting in is fully synthetic. However I do not plan to run it to 8K Thanks

I just don't like the added expense of synthetic oil when regular oil is cheap enough to change more frequently....... |
