Well, for starters I have had this vibration for a while now. It starts at 60-70mph. It goes away when I decelerate?
I thought at first it was the double cardons, well, I looked up under it, the UJ's have been replaced already! Ok, so the rear is suspect now... well, I take the DS off, and look at the joint, it seems ok? I re-install the driveshaft, and check the diff. I pulled the plug, and the oil is milky, drop the drain, and there is metal ALL over the magnet! LOTS of metal....I am kinda bummed, but I clean the metal off, and put new oil in the diff. Well, the vibration has diminished QUITE a bit. I did not have time to check the front diff, I will do this in the next few days. My question, Do you think the rear diff is becoming toast? Or do you think it was just the bad oil? Thanks!

Question, when was it changed last? I assume you bought this used, do you have the service history? Are the breather lines still attached to the front and rear axels?

I think milky is water + oil mixed rapidly by the diff's action. That metal had to come from somewhere.
Save your pennies for an ARB set up and gears, or Detroit, or etc.

You may want to seek professional opinion on this, but I wouldn't worry so much about metal shavings.
It sounds like the diff oil change you just performed was its first. The magnetic diff plug is used to catch the metal so that it does not circulate in the diff oil and really screw-up your diff gears. |

Eric,
Did you get just metal filings or were there little chunks? When the oil goes milky, you are frying you bearings. Rovers are know for weak diffs, so if it starts to vibrate again, better pull it and consider a locker or anothe used Rover diff. Mike |

The thought had occured to me that the bearing could be shot, We shall see as time goes on, If it ends up toast, I will just put another diff in there. ![]()
