Default What should I pay for a replacement 4.6?

Yep, almost positive my engine is toasted.
Yay.

What should I expect to pay for a new one?

By new I mean used of course!

Probably at least $2000. Sometimes you might find a better deal, even as low as $1000, especially from someone that doesn't know they can get $2000.

Here is one for sale from a reputable source: 04 D2 Sai 4.6 2300 - DiscoWeb Message Boards

Sorry boss - it ain't gonna be cheap. Roverland Parts (in Tampa) has used, low-mileage 4.6 engines for $3,250. But there aren't any in stock. I would SERIOUSLY avoid junkyard/LKQ engines - there is no guarantee that after you replace it that it won't fail like the original one did.

Car Cannibal and a few other guys sell fully rebuilt and upgraded engines, but these are even pricier.

Why do you think your block is toast?

How do you know your engine is toasted, be very specific as to the tests done so far.
As to the cost, a lot, if you buy a used engine, being a 4.6, it is going to need to be tested and inspected before installing. Are you going to do the engine swap, if not, a lot more. You could very easily hit $5000 plus if a shop does it.

Well here is what i know.
First the shop i took it to i trust.
They dont do a whole lot of discos but they have done a few.

My block compression test was fine. But there is coolant in some of the cylinders, on some of the spark plugs.
Extreme misfire, im guessing due to air getting in the motor from the blown head gasket which it has. All in all about 18 check engine codes.
Im not sure which ones but i can get the list.

It sounds like that sleeve problem that everybody talks about.
Im not an expert, and they said they arent positive either, but thats what it sounds like.

He's a pretty good guy, but I doubt he'll take much if any less. He does land rover parts for a living, and knows what he's got.

Well I can't pay that much.
First off I can't afford it lol..
Second
I just can't see paying that much when you can get LS1's for half that, and they are far superior motors.
That of course doesn't help, seeing as I don't think anyone has ever pita ls1 in a Disco

Oh well.
Not sure what to do

You still guessing and worrying over if your engine is bad!!!
Not sure where you came up with dropped sleeves, you are your worst enemy when it comes to diagnoising and engine.
Quit guessing and pull the heads, for sure you have head gaskets and machine work with nothing besides your guessing, that you have dropped sleeves.

How do you figure it to be a liner problem? If you're not mixing coolant and oil and your block compression test checks out - its probably not the liners. It sounds like it just may need a new set of head gaskets. If you're mechanical and can do it yourself, parts and machining could come in at around $600. If you're not mechanical, it's about $1500 to have the pros do it.

Also, keep in mind when shopping for engines that you'll have to pay removal and installation too, which can easily go up to $1500 in labor alone.
