Still my question was, is anyone using Mobil 1 Synthetic 10/30 on their Disco II?
And how good is it?

I've tried the Royal Purple 15w40 and at $27 a gallon it adds up quick, especially if you like 3k mile OCI's I did not do a UOA but it did not burn anything every 3k like the Castrol Syntec 5w50 I have in now did. I have heard very good things about Rotella T 15w40 and I am going to Wal-mart to pick up some as I am due for a oil change. At $9 a gallon that will be a lot easier on the wallet. If you want to know more about oil bobistheoilguy.com is a good website to check out.
I have been doing little experiments with oil all year to find something to make the engine quieter. I think the Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic Blend 10W40 has been the quietest so far.

Just my two cents on Mobil 1. In the early day's, I used nothing else. Had no problems. Within the last 5 years have used it in a high mileage Dodge Caravan, a low mileage Chrysler Town & Country, Mazda B4000 pickup and a Subaru WRX. Not one made the 3000 mile oil change without a top-off. Switched to RP in the WRX and Castrol High Mileage in the others and in each case my oil consumption went down considerably. I don't know why I had such recent bad luck with the M1, but it left me with a bad taste in my mouth for the brand. Started using the RP in the DII's, but at 6qts each every 3000 miles, it adds up quick. Add in the fact that these engines build up crud so fast, and the Rotella-T has become my go-to oil for the Discos. I love it, and it's no lie when they say it keeps these engines running clean! So in answer to your question, no, I haven't run it in the Disco's and I never will. Mine may be a unique experience with M1, but why mess with what works and is cheap to boot!

winters in NYC can sometimes be freezing. That's why I thought of M1 Synthetic 10/30.

In my VW GTI, I ONLY used mobile 1 0w40. But when I got the rover, something didnt feel right when I was running it. I dont know what it was. My guess is that maybe it was a lack of oil changes from the previous owner. But Rotella T, I think, has really cleaned her out and she is really smooth.

This is what I do, I have never used anything other than 10 40. I buy 5 quarts of the cheap $1 per quart and 6 quarts of high milage castrol + Lucas. I drain the old, do not remove the filter and put the cheap stuff in. Drive to the dealer to buy a filter. Come home drain again, change filter, add high mil. stuff in and top off with the lucas stuff.
But now ill just go with rotella. but ive only seen it by the 5 gal bucket that i used on my Mack trucks.

These engines don't need much in way of oil...ideally you will change it every 2500-3000 miles anyway.
Of course, as a flat tappet engine, there is a need for sufficient levels of the most traditional additives. Zinc dithiophosphates (aka ZDDP) but mention of it in this forum gets p7rangie extremely agititated. The tappets and oil system were made for 20W50. An excellent choice these days would be 15W50 Mobile 1. James |
